I was over at a friends, who had purchased Warhammer, and I was playing it for a bit a few hours maybe, off and on over the last week...

And I have to say, if UO would compete with these guys on a graphics level there would be little to hold back UO imho. Just in a few hours I was sitting there thinking "I wish I could do this from UO" "It would be nice if warhammer had this from UO"

But basically it all stemmed from me wishing UO had nice graphics and a better environment. UO has alot of good features, housing, open skillsets etc etc

Just to be handcuffed by a handcuffed dev team... No graphics, no ingame presence, no support, no real evolution in game mechanics. I know we can keep the same 2d perspective but why not make the game 3d? I really liked being able to jump in warhammer. I know I know, what can you do the owners are making warhammer... What can we expect?

No this is not a rant! I like UO, like it better than Warhammer so far...

My personal vote is to make this game private, buy it all back from the ones who have forgotten us, so people who actually care about the game can make it happen... Not that the devs do not care, but they work for warhammer (mythic), and thats lose lose for UO. Least if the devs worked for us they could make changes that would compete with the big dogs.

Please stop pancakes about graphics, this is why we have the ******* child KR. Lots of us love 2D and don't play other games because we don't like the graphics.

That's fine and dandy you can always have your option of 2D. No one is talking about taking that away from you.

I've been playing since Lord British was fire fielded to dead by Rainz and I'd like to see the game moved forward with graphic improvements that can compete with other successful MMORP's on the market today. That doesn't mean taking away the 2D client for those who want to use it.

Like the OP I always compare other games to UO and I always will. UO is the grand daddy of them all and could be the number one game again if it's driven in the right direction. I played Titan Quest for about a year and I was saying the same thing to myself about that game "if UO could only be like this it would be a great game".

I'm with OP and those who support pumping some life back into UO and moving it forward into the future.

Hey I'm all for more graphics and nice graphics and don't even mind 3D ;)

But KR wasn't it, faded watercolor lookin stuff, over/undersized models, God-awful interface, funny/weird movement. I won't start on the UI and stuff.

I for one, would love to see UO with more and better *and* 3d. But only if done right, and done in the form of UO.

Here I was playing Cryssis and I thought to myself, if only UO looked this good...

Graphics and art direction are extremely subjective things. Warhammer as far as I'm concerned is extremely simplistic and using very outdated (and sometimes curious techniques).

It doesn't support forced anisotropic filtering with its specular lighting system (a feature you'd expect anygame made after 1996 to support). It only supports complex shadows on YOUR character and nothing else in the world. The in-game texture filter is extremely limited to the point that anything 10 metres infront of me looks like a water painting. The water itself features no refraction and looks as dense as the ground next to it.

Need I go on?

Well I hear you there, I was unimpressed with KR as well, but I will point out that KR is just another spin on the same old stuff, different artwork but the game still looks dated... I would say the same thing about 2D and KR I'm afraid. (Except that 2d runs alot better)

When I was comparing it to Warhammer I meant how the environment is more advanced, there are actual hills, you can jump etc etc. And that it at least looks like it was made somewhat recently.

Imho the graphics should always advance in line with the times for UO to compete and stay current.

Yeah I wasnt saying Warhammer was all that, but cmon you have to admit the water is at least better than what we get! And it does look better overall imho...

But what I really wanted to point out was that if UO had at the very least current graphics, not the best, but even current, it would really put the sting into Warhammer and WoW... although I have never played WoW but have seen screenshots.

That's what I've always been saying. If UO had decent graphics, it would be the best MMORPG on the world. However, if you played a game like Titan Quest or Diablo 3 and then get back to UO, you will notice how much graphics can contribute to a game, the environment and the whole mood of the player.

But how do you improve it without a whole new game?

A new release would fix this, but nothing will be able to bring the old game back to life. Even then who would want to? I'm sure cosmetic surgery could make a 90 year old look like a busty 20 year old blonde, but she's still old and frail.

Apply that same logic to the game (maybe not all of it) and you get the idea.
