so, luck... worth it?

hi guys, ive got a quick question about luck really.

is it worth it? im thinking of getting a new suit imbued for my tamer, and was thinking of a nice SDI suit for magery based shenannigans, but the (perhaps sensible) part of my brain is telling me that maybe i should look into luck a bit more. i tried a luck suit (about 800 or so) years back, and to be honest i didnt think much of it. but now with imbuing, and a few arties, getting a 1k++ luck suit is pretty easy now.

is it worth it? what are peoples thoughts?

I have a 1k luck suit and rarely bother with it. I used to use it when I'd fight Swoops on my tamer, but the loot never seemed much better. Could just be me, though!

I usually don't work too hard at getting luck into a suit for my tamer. I have two tamers that have suits with just over 1000 luck and I rarely bother to switch them into those suits. It has seemed to me that I get a fair amount of pretty nice stuff with luck in the 400-600 range. Even my tamers with less luck than that occasionally get something that's pretty nice.

One advantage of going with less luck if you tend to be a pack rat but hate running vendors is not getting so much stuff that your house and bankbox are always overflowing. The biggest disadvantage, perhaps, is that the arti drop rate is absolutely pathetic. But then again, it might just be that anymore it's pathetic for everyone and especially pathetic for those using pets or summoned creatures to do most of the damage while hunting.

I dont think luck on a tamer matters. I read somewhere that if the pet does most the damage, ITS luck is counted towards gaining arties. What a pet's luck is , I don't know.

I run practically no luck at all and my luck for getting arties is just as bad as the aforementioned :)

When killing with a pet your luck is what is calculated in the loot drop, and you need to get over 1500 to get to the next teir in the loot drop but I do think its somewhat random. I run a suit with 1200 + some change on my tamer and when I'm going to go hunt big stuff like perless or para then I hit the statue and it puts me at almos 1600 it does seem to make a difference on the big boys because their range of loot is some much higher not on every kill mind you but I have found some pretty good stuff hunting this way. Anyway this is a discusion that has been going on for years the best is to get a suit and try it out and see what you think. With imbueing now its not that hard to make a suit worth while.

Luck helps but it also depends on what you need or could use more. I just got back after 3 years and wanted to see if it was worth keeping my luck suit. I took my tamer into Blood Dungeon to fight bloods and blood paragons. Without any luck, I would usually only get 2-3 items on the corpse and most of that stuff was very low end with almost no magical properties. Here and there I would get a decent piece like a piece of armor with 90 luck or a piece of jewelry with +10 in some random skill. With my luck suit which is 1415 right now, I usually end up with 5-6 items on the corpse and they have much better magical properties overall. Paragons seemed about the same as far as amount of loot items but after about 20 paragons I got no paragon chests or marties and with my luck suit and about 25 paragons I got 2 marties and 3 paragon chests. Hope this helps.

About a year ago I asked myself if luck actually works - and exactly how it affects the loot we see. I posted my conclusions in this thread: http://vboards.stratics.com/showpost.php?p=1016044&postcount=13

I know it's a bit longwinded and perhaps confusing if you don't read the thread from the start, so I advice you to do so.

In case you feel lazy, the short answer is: Luck does work. It (marginally) increases the number of items you get and above all it increases the chance of getting items with 100% intensity properties.

So game-technically it works, but it won't guarantee that you get anything worthwhile hanging on to, it just increase your chances.

I do not believe that paragon chest dropping rate is affected by luck. (Only marties are supposed to be). But I have not tested that.

Is luck worth it? Oh yes. From experience it matters a great deal - even if it`s somewhat broken. I run a tamer with a lucksuit currently at 1810. With the statue she is at 2.3K. I am seeing more gold pr kill and higher intensities overall than I do on any of my other characters. The difference is like night and day. You don`t really see that difference until you have hunted with a really high luck suit I think, which is why so many thinks it makes no difference.

Could you elaborate on the issue of luck being 'somewhat broken'?

You don't need sky high luck to see it work. You just need to look closer, because it kicks in less often. The reason why it's easy to miss the effect of luck, I believe, is because you can have an item with several 100% intensity properties (which is what luck does) - but it's still a crappy item because you don't get the desired properties So you toss it (or unravel it) and forget about it.

The tests I have run on TC involved a suit of about 1200 luck and it made a difference.

in my mind luck was pretty useless to start with and now imbue has killed it off entirely, does it really matter now if you can get some pretty nice pieces on a loot when with very little work you can make awesome items with your imbuer with exactly what you want on them.....

I`d say yes it is worth `someting`...it wont be the OMG,,AN ARTY EVERY KILL.

what i do see it being usefull for is basic imbuing reg farming.
Allow me to elaborate.
Luck supposedly increases total items to loot and their intensity.
Therefore could potentially yield more relic frags in the long run or/and
just more amounts of the 3 basic imbue regs [residue/e.e./r.f.]

Now givin i don't run a luck suit on my tamer personally but keep in mind i only let him see the light of day every 5th week of the month.

I can't say too much since I don't regularly hunt with my tamer(legendary disco across the board)

But the last two harrowers I've taken my 1400ish luck tamer to have resulted in rare drops(skull pole and evil idol)

So I will continue to tweak my suit for max luck since other mods on my suit don't make a difference(might add hp increase or mana regen)

Like Paps said, it could lead to a few more relic frags. As far as *useful loot*, I'm in agreement with Lion: you can imbue better.

I'm back playing UO after 9 years away and was wondering if someone could tell me more about lucky statues. Where do you get them? How do you use them? Things like that.

Thanks!

You can get luck statues in the old anti-virtue dungeons. You just hunt and they will drop in your pack. They are one of a set of tenth anniversary artifacts that drop in those dungeons. You have to kill an awful lot of of mobs before you get an arti.

However, they dropped far more commonly early on, and there are a lot of them around, so you should be able to buy one or get one from someone easily. If you are on Cats you can ICQ me and I will give you one.

All you do is double click them and you get a 400 point luck boost for an hour or two. You can use the statue once every 24 hours I believe. They look like the UO logo in the shape of a light blue vase. In my opinion one of the uglier bits of art in the game, but that's just my opinion, and I'm still happy to have them to use... when I remember to use them...

Llewen,

Thanks for the great info and for your generous offer. However, I'm on Lake Austin so I guess I'll go hunting for the statues once my character is strong enough. :)

You don't need to be that strong in fact. You gain arties and the statue by killing a lot of mobs not killing the strongest

So you can just go kill lizzardmen in Despise or earth elem in shame :)

The bonus for the statue is 200 + (50*years played) and it lasts 1 hour
so a ten year vet would get 200+ (50*10)=700 luck
they also do not stack and if you have more than 1 you can still only use them 1 time per day! total so if you have 10 of them you can still only use 1

the minimum bonus is 200

The boost is based on account age. It is something like 200 luck + 50 for each 12 months of your accounts age.

Does anyone know if the luck boost is modified by account age?

JUST KIDDING. :)

Do you have to hunt in Fel dungeons to get the luck statue, or can it be done in tram? I'll occasionally get some of that Virtue armor, but i've never been blessed to get one of those statues. QQ for me.

You can hunt in Trammel. In theory the drops are connected to fame so you should get more drops in Fel.
