So about the SA client...

A few weeks ago I tried the SA beta client. Due to be being a hardhead I was quick to hate it and walk away.

Something bugged me about that so I decided to fire it up and really give it a chance. I have to say I am actually impressed and a bit annoyed at myself that I gave all my stuff away months back, but I wont bang that drum here. Its been done too many times.

I love the ability to change the resolution.
The weather rocks.
Like the KR interface elements blended with 2D. Nicely done.
Character movement seems much smoother now, compared to a few weeks ago. Not sure why really.
Dont know what my problem was with the trees, guess I was seeing things. Everything looks fine.

Just a tip for anyone out there like me who is stuck in 2D and wont give it a shot. I suggest you do.

I don't like the graphics. Worse than 2D's IMO.

Yet it still manages to look worse somehow. Just the low resolution art I guess.

And thats where I was a few weeks ago until I actaully took the time to pay attention and realized its the same art. my problem was that I had the resolution set crappy, I think. Looks great now. Play around a bit.

I have.

Also, I played KR and liked the graphics, if that says anything about why I dislike it.

It seems a little darker, or something. Must be using different/more colors or something.

Agreed.

I think the client is really shaping up.

The Devs got it right this time.

Ya it is darker but you do have the option to brighten it up under users settings under graphics. fastest way to bring up users settings is hit the esc key. You just have to play with it til your comfortable with how you want it to look.

The brightness is by default at 50%. You up it to around 80% and, for reference, the sandstone of Luna returns to its retina-searing glory. At or above that setting, though, some things appear burnt out.

Also I think there's a caul over the entire play window, a cloudy transparent screen that musses up the play field a little to make it look less tiled. It scrolls with parallax when you move about so I guess it's intended to look like a weather effect.

I've been using the SA Client since 4 weeks exclusively. I have much less technical and usability troubles than I had with the KR Client. Some of the functionality is way better than the 2D Client (macros, map, etc.), which makes it difficult for me to switch back to 2D, cause I got used to it. When I log back in with the 2D Client after playing with the SA Client for a longer time, I realize how outdated the legacy graphics really is.
The SA Client still has lots of minor bugs and some graphical glitches (which I hope will be resolved, as the client still is in Beta), but I prefer it to the 2D Client nevertheless.

I'm trying to use it but its just so hard for me to get used too.

Also, I much prefer the legacy backpack but why does it look so fuzzy?

One thing that I ... well just dont know how to explain is how I had apparently accepted the movement of my characters in 2D as ... well ok.

Now that I have been playing the Enhanced Client, with its smooth movement, when I do load up the 2D and move, it is ok but it is also choppy vs continuous movement.

Its very smooth. its like ice skating across the landscape rather than running or walking.

Whats actually happening is your character stays in the same spot .. the landscape scrolls undernerath you to give the impression of movement. In SA you do not get the impression of movement ... you can clearly see that the landscape is scrolling and in that respect SA fails.

There is no excuse in 2009 for graphics to look so bad when zoomed in. None whatsoever, ESPECIALLY with the creatures and avatar left over from the KR client. It's laughable.

A zoom in function that results in you looking like you are playing 'Donkey Kong' shows that there is something WAY lacking in UOMythic's team atm.

I absolutely agree. However, it still is WAY better than the 2D Client (which doesn't even have a zoom). I still hope that the resolution issues will be improved before the SA Client is released.

I am leaving, right frickin NOW, to go buy me a lottery ticket.

First Budweiser tells someone that it is worth coming back to UO now...and now Arcus says he LIKES the new client.

I think I will need to quit UO now.

OK...I am kidding about quitting...but I am impressed not only with the Open Minds that the new client is creating out of Customary Hardcore Haters on Stratics, but with how utterly cool the new client is.

Seriously...all kidding and sarcasm aside...the new client is cool...and Arcus...Plus Rep for you!!

Sig says it all. The second of my two main issues is being addressed (custom UIs), but I DEFINITELY want a higher resolution setting to limit or eliminate the distortion and pixelation from the zoom feature and NOT be forced into playing a game with microscopic graphical elements.

Dermott. What kind of rig are you running? Just curious. I am starting the process of getting a new comp. The video card will have as much memory as this ole comp which is maxed out at 2 gig.

lol thats close to being my rig lol. I still feel silly getting this comp setup for some high end games only to return back to UO lol. Comp can handle any game on the market and even run AoC, DFO at the same time while I'm watching a movie and maybe downloading some things and not get any lag and the only game I can find worth playing is still UO lol.

I vote for a Tech Forum!

By the way, for very little money, you can improve your rig quite a bit by getting a second 1TB hard drive and running in RAID 0. It's much faster on drive reads/writes but doesn't have fault tolerance (but then, neither does a single hard drive). I think you can do it with almost any X58 motherboard.

That's pretty close to what I'm going to have soon.

Add in cooling and overclock the Core i7 to around 4 GHz though :p

I'm still not sure on a video card though. I was thinking about the GTX 285, but I might wait for ATI's DirectX 11 cards, get 2 1GB versions, and CrossFire them together. I dunno.

About the graphics adapter:

I have a $50 Nvidia GeForce 7600 GS (no fan, passive cooling), and SA Client runs very smoothly on that.

You don't need high-end equipment to run the SA Client.

Take off the nostalgia goggles, tons of stuff is worth playing.
Doesn't seem that way for me.

AoC = Sucked
DFO = Sucked
Vanguard = Sucked
LoTRO = Sucked
EQ2 = Sucked
WoW = Sucked
CoH = Sucked
DDO = Sucked
Aion = Sucked

So on, So on, So on, So on, So on, lol. Just a matter of personal opinion I guess. Not nostalgia goggles either really, still having fun in UO today otherwise I wouldn't be here.

Because MMOs are the only games, right? And they did not all suck, most of them were meh though.

That would be why I said it's all about personal prefference I guess. To me, yeah there are only MMO's. Not much of a single player game kind of guy.And maybe not all of them sucked, some really did and the others I just didn't find worth playing.

If enough of you tech heads form a nice space can I come in there and get you to pool your knowledge for me someday so I can get a decent pc without killing my pocketbook?

And then when you get all the UI stuff for UO all cool can you help me figure out how the devil to get it working for me?

I'm seriously trying to make a go of the new client... It is hard as the dickens on my eyes though... Though I figure it will just take me getting used to the way it looks.

As for other games... there just isn't anything out there that has nearly what UO does.

I don't want to have to be partied to do things... I don't want to have to join some group to adventure... though I don't mind adventuring with groups just don't want it forced on me... don't want to look like ever other level 30 whatever race character out here... Don't want to have to play the quest racket the get the things I need.... going from one silly quest to another over and over going on and on for 6 hours just to get one lousy item.

I love deco and design and "owning" my own piece of the land to customize and build however I see fit ... hampered only by pretty much my own imagination.... I don't want some cube no one else can see or visit... don't want some prefabricated place...

And most of all..... I want role-play... and lots of it.

But at the sametime... I want variety..... if I want to be a drunken beggar one day and a Murderer the next that's what I want...

I love having my own templates... I love building my own characters... the uniqueness of UO is far superior to anything else out here. Nothing comes close to that.
