Snake Charming... what am I missing?

It's quite possible that I've missed something - I have done a fair bit of searching around for information - but... is there anything more to using a snake charmer's flute than a poor man's version of herding?

When I heard "snake charming", I had visions of being able to tame a pet snake - with a bard's skill, not a tamers. I had visions of taking my baskets of tamed, trained snakes along to a fight, and musically directing them to attack people (or maybe just tie their legs together). I had visions of teaching a chorus of snakes to dance to the notes of a flute.

Instead, what I have is a tiny piece of the herding skill.
I can tell a snake to go somewhere. Hooray.
I can't tell it to attack.
I can't tell it to follow me - although, it generally gets annoyed and does that anyway, with blood in its eyes!

Someone, please tell me that I've missed something. Please?

I believe its used to be able to get in the nests without being attacked and poisoned I dont remember what it was yo get from the nest probably poison vile of some type! not sure just remember reading posts about it here so you might try a search here on stratics!

I was thinking it had something to do with a component you use to produce dyes.

There are two uses:
1. to charm silver serpents allowing you to milk them for venom - this is used in making fixative for natural dyes.
2. to command any snakes to fetch the eggs from the nests by Medusa's lair, those are the keys to access that peerless monster.
