Smithing Question

I have a question related to the Ancient Smith Hammers...

If I have 110 smithing real skill and I have a 120 scroll, what effect does a +30 ASH hammer have? Does that mean I will then have a 140 Skill? If so, how does that effect the quality of the items I make...

I mean I see +60 hammers selling for quite a pretty penny... the only use I see for them is a smith with 60 skill to bump them up to 120 skill...

Is there something I am missing?

every ash-hammer increase your smithskill by the amount which it grant by this hammer.

if you have a legendary smith 120.0 skill, and add a +60 ash, your skill increases to 180.

and it is a "showen" bonus, this means you see that you are at 180 skill when you look into you skills.


180 skillsmith means, that you are often able to craft exceptional items, or if with 120% the chance to craft something isnt 100%, with this hammer you reach the 100% of sucsess.

not sure if this an exploit but you can also use the +10, +30 and +60 ancient hammers with the runic smithing hammers so you can make almost always exc platemail armor with the runic benefits

That's not an exploit. It's documented that ASH and Runics stack, but it will take a charge from both hammers when you do so.

Note also that the ASH does not affect BODs, just crafting and enhancing chances.

thx Petra I needed to know that i have 6-7 +30 ancient hammers left over from the black rock turn in been saving them until i get to a higher lvl

also the Hammer of Hephaestus adds +10 to smithing when equipped but is not able to be stacked with the runics (figured i would just add that)

I pretty much use a acient hammer to increse my chance to make exceptional platemail armor since it has a low exceptional rate. Mostly to fill bods or make good armor for someone.

SUrprised nobody mentioned this, but ancient hammers also effect your chances to successfully enhance weapons and armor.

It is pretty much the only thing you need a +60 hammer for; with a 30 and decent talisman everything craftable should be 100% exceptional.
