Silly system question

I have a 320GB Western Digital IDE drive. When I built my new system, I used a Vantec IDE-to-SATA conversion kit and it is now plugged into a SATA channel on my mobo. My 2 optical drives use the IDE channel.

But ... in Win-doze, the drive is reported as USB!! Thus when I use my thumb drive I need to exercise caution on drive disconnection.

The "How come?" question: How come an IDE device plugged into a SATA channel reports as USB in the OS? No, I have no RAID setup ... this is the only HD in the box.

Sounds like a cheaply made converter. They used circuitry from a USB to sata converter, which is easily available, and slapped an IDE interface on it.

Re: Silly system question (UPDATED)

I'm gonna check my sons system in a bit. His optical IDE units ares on converters ... if you're right they should report as USB devices as well. A co-worker who recommended these also uses them and he doesn't have the anomaly. <shrug>

Wierd, just plain wierd.

Sons system has 2 optical devices converted to SATA in the same manner as my HD was. He has 2 HD on IDE. His optical do NOT report as USB. Hmmmm.
