One of the ideas I have been mooting for some time is that of a Siege Expo, a weekend of events not only for the benefit of those already on the shard, but primarily to attract non-Siege players to come and participate and possibly get a few to stick around. The recent thread about Siege events prompted me to think again about this and it also occurred to me that July is the anniversary of the birth of the shard.
So what if we started planning for a Siege Ninth Anniversary Extravaganza, a week of events to celebrate the occasion and raise the profile of the shard? The idea would be for at least 2-3 events per evening during the week (plus the odd Euro-time one) and then almost continual activity during the day and evening at the weekend. Events would be of all types, but with an emphasis on those that newcomers can participate in and win prizes for. Every major guild would be encouraged to organize something, or at least supply people willing to help out in the running of an event. Co-operation would also be sought from all guilds to ensure that certain events were not disrupted.
The proceedings would be advertised in advance on Uhall, and on the week itself there would be daily updates of that day's events. Hopefully, we can ask the mods to remove all antagonistic posts (by either side) which always seem to break out with any mention of the 'S' shard, but which do us no good at all.
There would be over three months in which to prepare for all this, and who knows, maybe by then the Devs will have finally done something about ROT (yeah, right). They may also be persuaded to offer some support for an event or two, perhaps in the form of commemorative prizes.
If there was enough support for all this, we could perhaps form some a loose committee to start organizing and scheduling the events, just as long as there was a genuine willingness to see it through. We could try and have a communal Vent and possibly UOAM server available for the week.
A few suggestions for some of the events/activities: -
Duelling Tournaments – Several of these could take place, in different locations and with different rules/themes including one for newcomers and one 'costume' tourny that I think we have had in the past.
Dragon Wars – Fights involving pet dragons, possibly team based with 2/3/4 per side.
Animal fights – Involving a mundane animal (not chickens) with betting. A free bet for newcomers?
Siege Grand Tournament – Based on the medieval event, including jousts, guild field fights, and ending with the Grand Melee (free-for-all fight).
Manhunt – Newbs would be given a couple of minutes to hide in some specific location (e.g. a dungeon level). Then the Siege bad guys would come looking for them.... Prizes for those that stay alive the longest. Could use UOAM to ensure participants stay in the designated area, and if they were partied we could record who got the most kills. Event could run with regular shard crafters/etc as the quarry instead.
Miss Siege – An event I have had planned for over a year but never gone ahead with. Notable members of other shards would be invited as judges.
Storynight – Like the regular event, with prizes for newcomers who participate.
Elixir - Another event I planned but never ran. A contest to find the 'Archaeus Magnus' or best alchemist on Siege.
Blessed a Minute – An event held in a tavern but actually taking place on Vent (or better still WR radio). Based on the UK radio show 'Jest a Minute' where contestants have to talk for one minute on some (UO related) subject without hesitation or repetition.
Farmer's Market – A half-hour slot each day where newcomers can come and sell resources to veteran crafters.
Meet the guilds – A slot where newcomers can meet and talk to representatives of the Siege guilds.
Spawnfest – It's amazing how many newcomers have never done a champ hunt before. Beginning on Saturday morning, Siegers would visit each of the T2A champ spawns in turn and assist newcomers to complete it, helping out more as the level increases. A field hospital would be set up to res and resupply. As things get more difficult, newcomers could turn to looting and resource gathering. Siege participants would be encouraged to give up all scrolls earned and these would be rolled for by the newcomers. Event would finish with Oaks, and possibly a shard harrower at the end?
Could do the same on Sunday, this time perhaps with the shard trying to complete the circuit as quickly as possible and with or without a truce. Newcomers could loot.
