Should EA Mythic get into the Broker business in UO?

Hail: I ask this because of all the scripting threads, and all the Gold people say they have, even without scripting. In one other thread a guy said if you can't make 1 million in a hour, you don't know how to play the game........

So, You have every item in the game. You are well set in your Castle, Luna, and prime 18x18 spots. All your houses are decorated to the max. So, now what?

What good is it to script, or power play for gold? You have nothing left to buy, because you already have everything you want. The only option left is to sell your in game stuff for real life $$$.

There are a lot of web sites devoted to this. Should EA/Mythic throw their hat into the ring? They already sell a lot of stuff. Advanced charaters, soulstones, secure account transfers, and so on.

Why not take it a step further, and make players who are interested in buying or selling, have to register with EA, and now make it a Bannable offense to buy or sell in game items for $$ without using the EA site?

There are people on every shard that drop those blue books on the ground, that promote a web site to buy items from, "LUNA" vendors only. And to buy for real life $. As a player, who would you trust more? Them, or EA?

I am suprised that no one seen this or posted this here yet.
Seems as though SOE has teamed up with a company to control the sales of ingame items and gold for real money.

You can read the whole article at MMORPG.com

If most games went this way with this company it could be alright.
Guess we will just have to wait and see.

I think I would vote against it on the grounds that (1) I feel the goal should be try to keep the game in the game and (2) encouraging people to think of UO as a source of income just promotes more aggressive cheating.

As soon as they get involved in offline trading (especially where real money is involved), then there are a whole slew of coding and legal issues that distract from actually providing a game. And if ebay is trying to stay out of the business of virtual goods, it's probably not a good idea to try to be getting in.

It would work great if the , fixed scripting , fixed economy , made UO less item based. Any money made returned back into UO development and advertising..Hmm wait , thats to much..

EA/Mythic should NOT be selling gold for real money (there is an argument to be made on if they should be selling ingame items at all, but that's for another thread).

However what they should do is this:

- Establish an ebay-style auction site that owned and ran by EA/Mythic.
- Have a two-tiered auction system, one for ingame auctions, one for items for real money.
- Charge a fee on the items for real money auctions.
- Tie user accounts on the auction page to ingame accounts.
- Use the auction system as a method to track players who are putting up an inordinate amount of ingame resources (gold, materials, rare items, etc).
- If a user is seen to be posting an inordinate amount of resources for sale, then start an internal investigation on that account.
- If that account is involved in illegal activities, then ban the account and delete ALL items from said account.

Is there actually a difference between gold and in-game items? Gold is in fact an 'in-game item' itself.

People can quite legitimately buy in game items now and sell them for gold. In effect they have bought that gold. Legitimately.

Your post states what they SHOULD do but doesnt state WHY gold should be treat any differently from other in-game items, or why it SHOULDNT be sold...

I'm not 100% certain I am for them selling the promotional items they're selling right now.

What I'm more of a proponent is for a moderated location where the players can do so, but with the knowledge that their auctions are distinctly applied to their accounts and that action will be taken against exploiters based on what the investigations of the auctions turn up.

The argument about what EA/Mythic should or should not be selling I think goes further than that.

I have nothing against promotional items for pre-ordering/reserving a new box (anniversary or expansion), I'm a good bit LESS accepting of them then selling them separately from the game via tokens, but I think that selling a resource like gold or ingots or whatever goes too far. At that point, you've essentially removed a portion of the game itself and placed it in the hands of the cash register.

Collect fees from people selling ingame gold... sure... sell it themselves... not so much in my book.

You know.. the problem I have with this is...

I'm a 10 year vet. I'm a casual gamer and I have all of that... all my chars are done and i have loads of stuff...

I win UO!

I play UO for the end-game content... the scenarios, the events, the PvP battles, the role-play, the champ spawn business, factions, the fun stuff.

Which is what's been lacking attention.

I'm not a scripter and I have never cheated AND I don't know why you're crying about spilt milk.

Totally against ANY player making one thin dime real cash off UO, in any way, shape or form, EXCEPT for the sale of their UO account(s) (not trial accounts, in fact I'd have to say only accounts aged 1 year and and older should qualify) and then only if EA gets a cut (as in the $30 acct xfer fee).

Those who think of UO as their in real life cash flow (other than EA employees, and even then some of them probably run side businesses in the UO gold trade), are THE WORST CHEATERS IN THE GAME.

I have absolutely ZERO desire to help UO's worst cheats pay their car notes this month.

But maybe you could suggest EA/Mythic adopt this plan for Warhammer?

IMO, EA/Mythic should make it illegal to sell anything UO related, anywhere, for RL dollars. Any items for sale should be sold by EA/Mythic in order for those funds to support development and game play. Any player caught buying or selling, from or to another player should have their accounts revoked, the items, pets, housing and all bank items deleted.

IMO, they should do away with Advanced Character Tokens. Implement blackrock type gains until you reach the 700 skill-cap, in order to promote the ability to jump in and play. Those who enjoy building their own characters may do so as they please. With this, you have the best of both worlds, for all types of players. Also add a number of items that can be purchased [nothing overly expensive] from EA/Mythic... For instance:

Gold $20.00
Skill Tokens [7x100 skill for new characters only] $20.00
Stat Tokens [Auto set stats] $15.00
Soulstones $10.00
Resources [Cybernickle's pricing seemed fair]
Special Decorative Items [$5.00-$10.00]
Special Engraved Clothing or Shoes [Plain clothing only] [$5.00]

IE.. Clothing with the following or similar messages:

Guild Abbreviation's [max of 4 characters, indicated at time of order]
Happy Holiday's
Happy Valentine's Day [St. Patrick's Day, Halloween, etc, with year]

Faction related clothing:

Follower of Minax
Follower of True Britanian's
Follower of Shadowlord's
Follower of Council of Mage's
Commanding Lord

LOL I could sit here all day and come up with stuff like this! Anything sold, shouldn't be terribly imbalancing to game play or blessed, but insurable in Trammel, since that's the way they like it.

Some things given as gifts, as they currently are, would be nice as well, but the extra income would be a great source of revenue without raising prices, because we all love the eye candy/pixel crack.

Furthermore, I can live without expansions, as long as we have great content such as the Magincia invasion. That was some awesome fun. Lengthy, exciting, live event content > rushed expansion nonsense, anyday! I think we could completely do away with expansions if new additions to the game were introduced with live event content and scenarios. Similar to the Juka invasion and introduction of the Solen Ants and blue beetles. With those, we had live event content and new, permanent content all in one shot. Good stuff!

No, never.

I would say, make it a Bannable offense to buy or sell in game items for $$.

I would like to see them make an ingame auction.

there's obviously cheating going on to pull that off. And I wouldn't call it playing the game if you feel compelled to have to buy gold. That's downright pathetic, laughed at in most circles of society, except from game geeks.

I hope they 100% ban gold sales, it totally screwed this game up.

Oh man.
No.

EA needs to worry about the game.
Fix it.
Make it harder or make it easier.
And leaving buying and selling outside of the game to players.

Create a game that is balanced.
If you want to buy 100 million vs work for it in game... SO WHAT thats why people work full time jobs.

If you want to earn game stuff, make it doable. If it can be acquired in game, then there is no reason to buy.

Remember those that buy... want to.

Just fix the game, make it less scritper friendly.
