Shiny New 0-GM Tinkering Training Guide

I noticed that the Tinkering training guide that is in the FAQ is very outdated as it still refers to the use of PowerHours, so I thought I'd write a new AoS-friendly guide whilst GMing my 5th Tinker (2 on Napa, 1 on Siege and now 2 on Europa).

Before I started I laid down some rules and guidelines to adhere to:

  1. Loaded 500 Ingots and 20 Tinker Kits into backpack, nothing else
  2. Made items that require just 1 or 2 ingots so no (or very few) Ingots are lost upon fails
  3. All items made (up to 90 skill) to be sellable to NPC
  4. Put the following items on UO-Assist's 'hot sell' list: Scissors, Hammers & Lockpicks
<pre>
Skill Ingots Item Made

00.0 - 27.5 NPC Bought

27.5 - 45.0 1134 Scissors (2 Ingots Each)

45.0 - 60.2 500 Hammers (1 Ingot Each)

60.2 - 92.5 8040 Lockpicks (1 Ingot each)

92.5 - 95.0 4868 Candelabras (4 Ingots Each)

95.0 - GM 11953 Scales and Spyglasses (4 Ingots Each) - alternated every 500 Ingots

Total Usage: 26495

</pre>

Points to note:
  1. If you are on Siege, you can easily get from 0 to ~30 skill by making spoons, knives and forks (1 Ingot Each)
  2. The hammers made where carpentry hammers, not smithing hammers
  3. When I reached 60.0 I still had 8 of my 500 ingots left so I just used them up, hence the extra 0.2
  4. From 92.5 - GM I put the 500 ingots into a bag and when the bag was full I took out any leftover ingots and threw the bag into a trash can
  5. Gains died at 94.5 on candelabras, but I made another 2 full bag's worth and they picked back up again
  6. From about 97.0 upwards the gains slowed dramatically. I found that after a couple of bags without gains I'd get 3-5 gains off the next one
  7. The last part from 95-GM I went through 38 bags with 95-105 in each before I binned it!

That's it! 0-GM Tinkering in 2 days, using just under 26.5k Ingots!

Hopefully the next expansion will bring us something good!

I just wanted to thank you for putting up this guide /php-bin/shared/images/icons/smile.gif I'm starting from scratch with a new tinker/miner on Pacific and it really helped a lot to be able to sell the items to get some extra money. Plus my mining isn't too great yet so it helps having to use less ingots. Thank you again for the wonderful guide and for helping us all /php-bin/shared/images/icons/smile.gif Hope they make this guide permant here.

Thank you everyone on your comments.

I've just finished another tinker, this time she is going to be a Golem Controller for the new expansion. Thought I would record my progress again as there have been a few publishes since the last guide, my results were quite pleasing:

<pre>
Skill Ingots Item Made

00.0 - 32.5 NPC Bought
32.5 - 45.0 778 Scissors
45.0 - 62.0 499 Hammers
62.0 - 92.5 7,491 Lockpicks
92.5 - 95.0 4,935 Candelabras
95.0 - GM 14,137 Scales, Spyglasses &amp; Heating Stands

Total Ingots: 27,840
</pre>

So by doing almost exactly the same as before it only took an extra 1,355 ingots, and that was probably only because I did it
in more sessions this time so it took a few more ingots to get back into the gaining run when I restarted.

Fingers crossed again for the expansion! /php-bin/shared/images/icons/smile.gif If you are on Europa shard and see my tinker about, say hi! Her name is 'Evlyna'.

Good luck!

Instead of scissors and hammers, just do clock parts (1 ingot) until you can do lockpicks.

NPC Tinkers buy clock parts, but only pay 1gp each for them. Scissors sell for 6-8gp, and carpentry hammers can sell for anywhere between 9 and 18gp each and are also only 1 ingot each.

Also gains are better when you make items that are increasingly difficult to make rather than making the same thing for a long time. You will end up using much more ingots and getting much less return on the items you make. That is why I don't take lockpicks all the way to 95 even though it is mathematically possible, it's not economical.

Thanks for the guide. I was thinking about adding tinkering to my mule but wasn't sure. Guess I will now. /php-bin/shared/images/icons/smile.gif

If I remember correctly from the irc chat tonight as a tinker you will be able to enhance tinker made weapons with colored ores. Not sure if that's it though, I would hope not.

Great Guide!

Quick question....

Who buys....

Candelabras
Scales
Spyglasses
Heating Stands

???

Nobody. They are just the most economical thing to make at that stage (not that there are many options at that point). Make them inside a bag and then throw the whole bag in the trash can. PLEASE DO NOT lay your tinkered goods out all around the bank to show off your tinkering prowess!!

Hmmmmm....just when yee thought yee knew it all!

Shipwrights buy Spyglasses!

For only 1 gp ... but at the end of your macro you could add "Vendor Sell" and as long as you are near a Shipwright .... poof they are all gone!

That is interesting, would not be the most profitable thing ever but it will certainly save a lot of hassle with sorting everything into bags, removing leftover ingots etc.

I'll look into it and add it to the guide, credit to yourself of course /php-bin/shared/images/icons/smile.gif

Does 8x8 help with Tinkering or can you GM Tinkering and spam at Brit Bank?

At around 35 Tinkering, if you are serious about hitting Gm tinkering, and have the space at your house/bank, I switch over to tinker tools

2 ingots like Scissors, and sell for like 1 gold, but you'll burn through them, so might as well stockpile them them when you can gain skill for them.

oh and my trick to not die of boredom is to watch a movie while i gain.

it has always worked pretty good, the time and gains seem to go much quicker.

It's a shame when we can get a moderator to post in the thread but can't get a moderator to sticky it... nudge nudge

*edit* heh ... I just notified the moderators of my own post to see if that will wake them up

Glad to hear it's still working and that it's brining good gains

I'm currently finishing another crafter off from 87 tinkering to GM and I'm going to have a 'tinker' with what I make, see if there is any quicker way to make those last 10%!

You need a satyr to discord you. I wonder if another guilded player/char on a second acc would work too.
I am just working (slowly) on a tinker and will probably go for spyglasses when my time comes to it. I will use them for the fitting request in heartwood. (Strangly the spyglasses quests gives tailor recipes, but I need them too.

Players cannot discord players. If your getting disco'd to help with skill gain, then I am afraid your stuck with the satyr.

Has anyone GMed a tinker very recently? Are you finding similar results as Aladaria had several years ago? So somewhere around 27k ingots to GM ?

April 2008.

just started on a new shard (cause im bored)
had to GM Tinkering 3 times.

1st time i did it the old way.
clock parts, gears, lockpicks 60-90, heating stands at 90 to GM
took just under 30k in iron and about 12-14 hours.

2nd and 3rd time.
about 9.5k in iron and 6 hours.
started character with 50 skill.
(or you can go to heaven and do the quest to 50, takes 5 minutes and you get the blessed tinker kit)
clock parts to 60
60-90 lockpicks.
then i packed up, went into the satyrs with 3k on my guy.
got discorded, make picks all the way to GM.

so i 1/3 my iron usage and allmost 1/3 my time.

enjoy.

Just wanted to say thanks for the guide and thanks to Poo, I did the Satyr method from 87-100, used 2200 ingots total making lockpicks and it worked like an absolute charm.

For those of you wondering how to use the Satyr's... *Note: if you have negative karma this wont work as everything in the dungeon will aggro you*

1. Go to Heartwood and get the quest 'Dreadhorn' from Calendor NPC Details

2. Then go the the Spirituality Moongate in Ilshenar, head west into the cave and then NW to the portal into Twisted Weald Dungeon Details

3. You should see a few Satyr's where the sandy part starts, aggro it and lure it to the portal you entered to get into the dungeon.

4. Once it has cast discord on you, immediately run out through the portal and straight back in again, the Satyr should have de-aggroed you but will continue to discord, now just stay close to that Satyr and start training which ever skill your working on.

For obvious reasons not all skills can be trained using this method as you have to move around but for certain skills its very good, especially in that last 90-100 range.

Nice bit of Thread necromancy.

And there I was hoping that someone had updated his Training guide for SE & ML (and perhaps even SA), Like I'd been asking for the last 18 months.

And, remember - you can donate those lockpicks to the Thief collector upstairs at the Britain Library collections.

There is a basic guide for the skill as it currently stands in the Tinker FAQ - including the option of using Wood for getting to 50, and the options for unloading lockpicks and spyglasses via Heartwood quests and Britain Library donations.
