Shard-wide Trick-Or-Treat event TODAY!! Sat. Nov. 5 @ 9:00 p.m. EST

Date: Sat. Nov. 5
Time: 9:00 p.m. EST (meet up time)
Location: Umbra bank (Malas). We will issue costumes and supplies, organize escorts.

As the post title says, this will be a shard-wide event for Halloween (for those that aren't familiar with it, this is a U.S. holiday tradition, where kids dress up in costumes, and go around their neighborhoods carrying bags, and yelling "trick or treat" at the doors, and people come out and give them candy and stuff. It is primarily a kids' holiday, but there are usually lots of costume parties for grownups that take place. There is usually a spooky theme to the costumes and decorating.)

PRIMARY GOAL: To get as many guilds & individuals involved as possible. Emphasis on introducing new players to the shard, and hopefully getting some goodies for them, but this is meant for EVERYONE to enjoy, and the more that join the group, the better!

Main event:
A pre-defined trick-or-treat route, with stops at the guild or private houses of those who have notified me that they want to participate. The houses should have some holiday themed decor, and one person there during the event to hand out "treats" (I prefer for anyone else in the guild willing to participate to join the main group from the start. The person that mans the house, will join when they are done passing out their treats).

Ideally I would like all of NEW, NEW., and DARK that are available to be the core trick or treaters group, as well as anyone not helping with the "route" as escorts, i.e. guards or as Wulf would say, a meat shield
. Everyone who is trick or treating will dress up in similar disguises, with orc, tribal masks, lots of incognito scrolls for whomever has enough mana to cast them to make things interesting, that sort of thing. Maybe have everyone tame a kitty to drag along as well. Castor and I have been putting together a bunch of costume kits, that include a set of horned or barbed leather armor, to hand out at the start. New players are not expected to provide or bring anything, only to show up.

There will be a prize awarded to the guild/individual with the best decorated house on the route, as well as the house that gives the best treats. The trick or treaters will vote to decide the winners for these.

Other activities may be added as time permits.

Update - 11/03: Thief co-event is being dropped, due to general lack of interest in it among the thief community.

Update - 11/04 meet-up place changed to Umbra because SOME people haven't upgraded.

That sounds like fun!

Why so late at night though? I've found that scheduling starting times for events on weekend afternoons (i.e., 2:00 or 3:00pm Pacific or so) is the best way of ensuring that my European and East Coast guildmates have a good shot at actually attending. :)

Skylark, if there is anything Iantown can do to assist you with this endevour, please let me know. I am at your service. *bows*

Well, Dor, 10 p.m. EST is actually a bit late for me, but for PST, it is only 7 p.m. so that is why I chose it as a compromise. I have tried to do Sat. afternoon events in the past, and have found that the bulk of people in U.S. time zones always seem to have stuff going on in the afternoon, be it regular weekend running around, chores, family activities, etc. I know that is the best time for the Euro crowd because it is early evening for them.

The time is not set in stone. If a whole bunch of people chime in to say, hey I would attend an afternoon (EST) Saturday event but can't in the evening, sure I'd change it. The goal is to have a time that the most will actually show up.

@Kelmo: thanks! I will be trying to get specific details together as soon as possible when I have an idea of the scope of participation.

That time might work better. I can do either but if your not in the US this one works better.

My suggestion will be that everyone equip with things they don't mind losing, knowing they will be fighting & very likely dying. This is meant to be fun, not provide a convenient high-end loot drop for PKs.

Sounds like a really cute idea. If you need me to stand on a doorstep and pass out goodies let me know. I could use my house in Wintermoor but it's a long walk there, or another house. Whichever.

Or if there is anything else you need help with let me know.

Ermm, I dont think "walk" is neccessary, Im sure one of the trick-or-treaters dressed as harry potter could do something.. I mean walking to locations close to one another is cool.. but yea..

I didn't mean because I didn't want to lose it. I ment if they take my weapon and I get a rez I can't fight back. I'd still have fun. Besides I suck at pvp so I'll proly die no matter what.

Well, that is what contingency plans are for, Limdul!

Since I will establish the route we will be taking in advance, I can mark runes to all the route locations, and maybe some in-between spots for the ones I plan to have us hoof-it. Then, in a stroke of sheer genius (
), I will enlist the aid of a trusted person not on the tour who can gate, and provide them with a copy of the route rune book. If we find ourselves in dire need of supplies on the tour, and no one is alive or with supplies to gate, I will send our backup angel a message, and he or she can pop a gate for us from a bank, and we will re-equip, and go from there, in theory.

Why would anyone need to re-equip? Ghosts are cool on Halloween!

Ohhh...I guess they can't hold trick-or-treat bags with ghosty hands though.

Indeed, I had thought of that...but alas, not only can we not hold treats in our ghostly hands but our demands of "Trick or Treat" would be mainly be interpreted as OooOoOo...plus we can't even emote as ghosts, to stick our tongues out at anyone with the nerve to not give us a treat

Thanks for all of the constructive responses, especially the ideas, and help offers I have received via PM!

This is really shaping up, and I am hoping it will be a great event. I will be adding it to the event calender, and also will be putting out some notices in game for those who *gasp* do not read the Stratics Siege forum.

The tentative date, and start time will be Sat. Nov. 5 @ 9:30 p.m. EST.

So far, these are definite parts of the event:

1.) Mass trick or treating group, which will travel a pre-determined route, collecting treats. All new players are especially encouraged to be part of this. Costumes, and any necessary supplies for activities will be provided, you only need to show up. I will be getting in touch with I^A, WAKA, and any other guilds who have indicated they will assist, to arrange an escort party.

2.) A co-event for thieves running concurrent with the trick or treat event, with prizes. Thieves must indicate their intent to participate prior to or at the start of the event however, to qualify for prizes.

3.) A house deco contest, the winner of which will be decided by the trick or treaters.

It is my intent to have other activities, but these will be kept secret.

DISCLAIMER: prices subject to change without notice
.

I want to help!!

I will setup a vendor with FREE trick or treat items!!

I would love to hand out myself, but in our neighborhood, we get 700-800 kids come through. So I will be stuck at the door for the evening.

That would be great cybernickel. However...I thought about staying at a Holiday Inn Express once, which granted me the superior foresight to make my Halloween event AFTER Halloween (the Sat. Nov. 5 date). So...unless you get hit by those greedy kids in your neighborhood for week long treats, perhaps you can make it in UO in pixel person!

Sounds like great fun! Put Stonehaven on the list of places to stop. We'll decorate, and set up a freebie trick or treat vendor! Stonehaven isn't too far to hoof it to Cybernickels!

Q me and I'll hook up with you to give you a rune. 220 571 153

You can put my house just north of Iantown on the route. I'll have just over a week to redecorate, that should be enough. What sorts of "treats" would we need to have on hand for these ghoulies?

G

Guest

Guest
Well, the treats you hand out are completely at your discretion...but one of the event activities will be for the trick-or-treaters to vote at the end for the house with the goodies they liked the best, as well as the house with the decor they liked best.

I will also be giving the treat donors on the route some special tokens in advance, to hand out randomly with the normal treats. Those tokens will feature in the co-event for the thieves.

Thanks for the bump. I submitted the info for the event calendar yesterday, for review. Hopefully there was nothing objectionable in my proposal, and it will get posted before Nov. 5 so people can officially ignore it in the Siege Events calendar.

I will hopefully be there to try to get some newer folks to Siege to know about it and to get to wherever you begin this ..just let me know when the time comes well a bit ahead of time so I can round them up..if they are online then !

I don't see any posts on the UO Siege Event Calendar to Approve. :)

Did you post it for November 5th? That square is blank (as are all of the others).

By the way, there is no need to submit anything for 'review'. *grins*

Simply post it on the date that you wish, and it will become visible as soon as someone 'Approves' it. Just hit the add/view entire calendar link (or however it's labeled; I am too tired to look) below the Calendar itself, and write up all of the info there.

If you were to do that, say, within the next 15 minutes or so, I could have it up and running for you before I pass out.

Yes, I posted all the details for Nov. 5 on the calendar, and reviewed everything several times, before I hit submit. Then I got a message that my post was submitted, and would need to be reviewed by an admin before it was visible...that was over 24 hours ago...and still waiting...I typed it all out and submitted it again. I am sure you have passed out by now though, Dor.

*sighs*

Hrmm. Something sounds amiss, as I have never heard of anyone encountering that obstacle before.

You are certain that you tried to post it on this Calendar, on this forum? (You cannot post on the UHall General Events Calendar for instance, although anything approved on a Shard calendar is automatically posted there as well)

If you are still having trouble, please do this for me:

Write up an announcement complete with the start time (including time zone) and details, post it on this forum (as a normal post), and then I can take that information and enter it myself on the Calendar ASAP.

Halloween..

Kids dress up as a monster or something with costumes..

They go door to door in the neighborhood knock on the door and yell "TRICK OR TREAT" and you give them candy.

Also notorious night for spraying everything with whip cream, throwing eggs at kids you hate, and sticking cherry bombs in mailboxs..

I am over 30 years old *cough, choke* and I just went out on my first goosie night! Wheeee! So much fun! The person in the neighborhood we really wanted to get was watching in her window so we didn't get her. She's such a grump! I may just have to go back out by myself at midnight!

Cherry bombs in peoples mailboxes is a *federal offense* so nobody DO that this year..if ya kill the mailbox AND get caught..it is a fed. rap..since the mailboxes belong to..uncle sam and the usa postal dept.

I remember this lil girl last halloween..she got extra candy off me, for orig costume. She was all wrapped up in towels and linens with the *gm mark* rl of Martha Stewart..and she had a ball and chain and prison outfit on ..with the linens and towels.
The lil girl so cracked me up for originality in outfit ..only one like it too...she got LOTSA CANDY off of me.

Nah, my biggest rule is toilet paper only. I brought all the kids and their friends in before we left and gave my "speech".No eggs and no shaving cream...And before anyone says anything about me being embarassing or a party pooper, all I can say in my defense is, it was nowhere near as long as a Py Lethius speech. lol. Was more a Kelmo speech...OK kids, toilet paper only, let's keep it clean, now get out there and paper the neighborhood! hehe.
