Richard Garriott launches into space just under 9 hours from now at 2am EDT. Here's to a successful mission and hopefully a more dedicated commitment to the gaming industry once he returns.

Surely if he can afford a trip into space, he should be able to scrounge enough spare change together to rescue UO!

The man doesnt like the game or even cares about the ppl still left playing it so why even bother praising him?
If he had any respect for what he created then he would have never sold off his dreams for money. But then again his dreams were problay about money.

You are wrong. I spoke to the man not so long ago. Money is what it is, but he cares.

Kelmo I had alot of fun playing in the Stone Haven alliance with you and TNT but on this subject, the matter is all about business. You either stick to your guns or you retire early. Thats what RG did i believe. Please dont think there is anything wrong with retiring early!!!!! God knows we all want that so we have more time to play UO. What it comes down to is this, Do you continue with what you started and see it to the end or do you start something only to release it to another in hopes of getting rich.

Being in the business of making sales( liquorstore manager) I know a thing or two about being profitable and not. The best way to survive in a world of fast pace sales and gimicks is Customer Service. Without Customer service, you are forced to recover your expenses and close shop. Our store has no budget for advertising but due to the Customer service we provide, our sales are growing by 32% a year.

RG had an outstanding plan when he first started. I remember reading about it in Time Mag about how ppl were paying 10k to buy accounts when it was still limited. I thought My God this man has found the Fountian of Wealth. I believe He made the right choice as a business man to sell off the game to EA at the time thinking it would last forever. I also believe EA made the wrong choice in the game (Pub 16) I believe that was them. That move single handedly ruined the game. Ever since then EA has been recovering its Expenses I.E. the sale to RG for UO. And it only shows by the downward slope UO has taken. Removal of Seerers, fewer and fewer Expansions, Outsourcing of Customer service, and the reduction of GMs and Devs for the game. I know ppl will say the removal of Seerer in game was a legal issue but in business you never tell the customers the true about your profit margins. Its just a way of reducing cost and maintaining you projected sales.

What it all boils down to is this. Is Richard a hero in the world of MMORPG? Yes he is. He is the one that started it all. He had one bright shining moment in history which he let slip away for the fast payday. If he had stuck to his guns, No game to come after UO would even come close to reaching its legendary status of the best MMORPG ever. My proof is what we are left with now.

Perhaps he is hoping to buy back UO once it is a bargain...kinda like GM and Ford stock today. That would be a sound business decision.

If he does then lets pray to the GODS of MMORPG that UO fully recovers and brings back the golden age of UO.

Origin Systems was sold to EA in 1992 I believe, 5 years before UO launched. I seriously doubt UO could have launched without the financial backing of EA to start with. Sadly you have to sell out your dreams in order to see them achieved....

Sat up to watch the launch, thanks for the URL AesSedai I enjoyed watching... it's amazing to see how much the Russian Space program differs from what we are used to seeing here in the US.

However, Garriott had to put his own money into the project first before EA would even endorse it. And when they did, not only did they endorse it, they made sure to sacrifice Ultima 9 (and any future MMOs) to make sure it succeeded.

Considering what has been done to UO. Why would he want to buy back? When he can wash his hands clean of it.

I never understood the hate some of you have for
'Lord British". You are still playing the game he created and still bash him. That's like living in someone's elses house and complaining about the food everyday. Why do you people think that he owes you anything? He created a game he figured people will like and buy and make a profit out of it like any business man would. He created this game many years ago and has moved on. If you hate him for "abandoning" you then too should move on or quit crying. People in the real world work to make money to have a better life. What do you do for a living (if you work for a living, I'm sure alot of people left playing this game are on some form of welfare) that you would give up money for so a dream could be fullfilled. Dreams don't buy houses, don't pay bills, don't take care of children. You guys really need to grow up. LONG LIVE LORD BRITISH!!!!

No one mentions the creative process here. He had a need to create something and he did it. At some point you have to let it go forward on its own as anyone, if they have ever created anything knows, you are always thinking of the next level and next project. I have always had hopes that he would ful fill his dream of a new game that took us with him. He has talked about it a bit I think this flight took precedence for now.

Why should a guy who worked hard have to give up millions of dollars of his OWN MONEY to the poor, instead of spending it on himself, who did the work to get there?

Obama '08, huh Garth?

An argument could be made that those that have profited from society as Garriot has should give back to the same society that allowed him to get rich to begin with.

They could always feed themselves by getting a job, you know. Or how about using some planning skills and getting an education instead of having 3 or 4 kids that are more than likely going to continue leeching from citizens that have worked hard for what they have. Everyone has opportunities here in America...most are just too lazy to take advantage of them.

- No worries. Even though he is working on his new creation, Tabula Rasa at NCSoft, there has still been plenty mention of Mythic's Ultima Online in the media over the past year. In fact, it seems like UO was mentioned more often than not in the news/online/tv articles I've seen.

I might even be willing to bet that Garriott has given UO more publicity in the past year than EA &/or Mythic has. Thanks for the marketing Mr. G.
And he is still quite proud of his UO creation as he was proud enough to celebrate its 10th Year Anniversary by showing up to the party (while Mr. Jacobs was also in town but did not show up for that event - once again I see a big NCSoft wig promoting to and participating in our UO more than some EA or Mythic big boys...).
Long live UO & Godspeed Mr. Garriott.

Here is an idea. What if all 100k UO subribers start mailing Richard Garriott when he arrives back on Earth? Rather than begging and pleading with EAMythic, why not plead for the original Ultima creator to come back to his Ultima roots?

I'm pretty sure he will be in a good mood when he arrives back safe and sound. When would there be a better time to ask for his help?

OT: When I hear about "have nots" thinking they deserve something for nothing, it makes me sick. Richard Garriotts gift of Ultima is still giving...

He said in a recent interview (I can't find it to quote though) that he was interested in returning to a sandbox game as his next project.

With Tabula Rasa slowly gaining momentum, I'm sure he'll return to Ultima for the next project... he has too.

Here is the message he sent that I mentioned last night. It is from a Tabula Rasa forum. Then towards the end of that post there are two potentials mentioned in posts 51 & 52:
It's just not clear enough in the stream from NASA, but I get:
Solar System is blank of blank
But person will not blank
In blank time.

The first blank and the last blank are the same and time could be speed. Anybody got anything more?
I've got:

Eternal is the youth of solar system

but/however person/people will not be

in the youth forever

Or youth might be span.

Eternal is the span of the solar system

however people will not be

in the span forever

I just can't make out the symbol that looks like a bed. Two long bars with a horizonal one connecting them with a little form on top ... what could that be?
- I tried to mess with it a bit last night, but I didn't get too far. Maybe because I am not familiar enough with Tabula Rasa's hieroglyphic Logos symbols; but I definitely smiled when I noticed him sharing the message.

(I just went to check my links and now I have to sign up in order to see them again. Maybe someone can host the picture, or at least make sure the links work for me? I'm not in the mood to sign up for another forum right now :))

It has always been my own “conspiracy theory” that UO was in fact a deviously clever alien experiment to determine how much abuse a human would tolerate whilst paying for the privilege. As UO has survived for over ten years and spawned an entire industry of imitators I am sure said aliens are now quaking in their boots (“boots” is a somewhat inaccurate metaphor here as these aliens have tentacles). LB is going topside to accept the alien’s surrender and take his rightful position as the new Galactic Overlord. :D

Is he the first "second Generation" space traveler? I saw an article where his father was on one of the Skylab missions.

Have there been any "real" cosmonauts or astronauts who were children of previous ones, or is Garriot breaking ground this way, if even only as a space tourist?

A

- Not the first (but he should be the first second generation as a civilian). I believe last night, when they were suiting up and showing his super cool 2nd generation Richard Garriott patch, they said this is the first time that two second generation spacemen will meet (I think a Russian cosmonaut already at the ISS is the other & I don't think he was the first of the 2nd generation-ers... but I'm not positive about that).
