The Battle Vortex guys was running a Siege IRC too. At that time IRC was easy to set up and I know there was also a anti PK chat, where people could call for help. I'm not sure why it died, maybe UOA map and voice chat took over.
Absolutely, and the beauty of it is that each group could manage their channel how they wanted. We had various guild channels and public channels.
The #SP channel was a bit of a social experiment of mine, in that I realized the quickest way to build up a channel was to empower people with channel control, so I granted "ops" rights very broadly, and then later on we started to assign it by vote in the channel. The catch was that any op could clear the ban list and when done it cleared the entire list. The other catch was that if the ops started fighting each other, one of them would typically get their ops taken away. It was beautiful chaos. At its peak, #SP was one of the top channels on all of Stratics IRC.
I still have a capture of an IRC log from #SP when (community guy at the time) Sannio visited the channel after a UOHOC meeting around P15 time I think? I could post but, I suppose I'd have to clean up some of the language.
