I was feeling bored today, and felt like helpin out. I had noticed there is a relatively new guild hanging around New Haven for the past couple of months, and I saw one of their members on, so I asked to speak to their GM. She showed up a few minutes later, and I asked if they would be interested in an alliance. The next hour was spent with them accusing me of being a guild killer and calling me names. A few other people at the bank chimed in with some snide remarks as well. As I was on an unknown char, and there is a character on our shard who makes a hobby of harassing new players I took it with a grain of salt, and patiently and politely explained that I was interested in nothing more then helping out where I could.

Taking them to my house would have proven that I was not the player they accused me of being, but my castle is in fel, and you can just imagine how well that would have gone over if I popped a red gate and said "come on through". So in the end, I had to just wish them luck, and leave them be.

I have finally GMd every crafting skill, 120d Imbuing, Smith tailoring, and I have nearly every template built. I have a treasure hunter, a fisher, a bard, a couple of tamers, warriors, mages, you name it. I have more gold then I know what to do with, all the items and armor I will ever need, and plenty of equipment that would be perfect for helpin out a new guild. I kind of feel like the rich old guy who has no kids.

I then went and spent an hour sitting in New Haven while browsing the internet, and a Young Player finally ran by. I was SO excited. I tried talking to them.. I asked how long they have been playing UO, if they needed any help or had any questions... All I got back was silence. The cold shoulder.

Just thought it was sad that all you get for trying to help people out these days is an ear full of insults and accusations, or put on the ignore list. Sad times.

meh west coast shards suck for having rather snobby people.. id rather deal with a worse ping then ever go back to them... seems like theres alot of hostility especially on sonoma and pacific.. but hey you get it everywhere.. just more often there ive noticed.

and im only assuming your talking about a west coast shard.. seem this issue arises more often there.

:) and i rephrased my wording.. the shards dont suck.. just the overall atmosphere and ambiance of the players do..

Please don't let a couple of bad situations ruin your outlook. When I first started playing UO a few people helped me, and I really appreciated it. I started pre-publish 16. I stopped playing after a couple of years. When I returned a month or so ago, I once again had help. Otherwise I wonder if I would still be playing? Maybe... maybe not...

Anyway, try again.

I'm sorry you've had that experience. I spend quite a bit of time helping young players and old returning players alike... and I very much enjoy it.

Though I can say I have had my share of "run-ins" with folk. I try not to let it get to me. On GL's I've never had too many people be quite that bad ... but we do have our fair share of scammers and cheats.

Maybe he/she was role playing a deaf and dumb person....Or a mute person.

Im being serious here....There are very few of those toons out there..but they are out there...

Don't let em get ya down I say. Im sure after a day or two there will be another newbie toon that needs help...I figure its likes this. Trying to find a newbie to help is like trying to find Valorie Ore with just a shovel...Sooner or later ya going to find it...But it does take forever and a TON of shovels....

I play chesse. I just resubbed a couple weeks ago and have found
people very helpful. The first time i needed something- forgot where the
shrines were to tithing chivalry. I went to Luna and asked at the bank
and someone right away led me up stairs to the shrine. then he gave
me a check for 200k gold 'to get me started' - was very nice of him.

Another time- i went to magincia - didn't know it had been attacked.
Died of course. Went back to luna and asked for help and right away
got help.

So AFAIK people are real friendly to anyone new or returning. Sorry to
hear u had a rough time trying to help.

ya, just thought it was sad that people have become so untrustling. I mean, sure, you have to be careful who you guild and stuff like that... But kind of sad that its to the point where if you offer to help somebody you are automatically seen as a bad guy. Oh well. Its nothin to quit over, I just thought it was sad.

IMO there is never any reason to be nasty etc to people in the game. If someone is like that I tend to ignore them completely/kick out of guild etc depending on the circumstances.

No-one need the grief you get and at the end of the day, smile to yourself cos they lost far more than they gained by being crappy to you! If your ever on Chessy, please send me a PM and we'll meet up and have a laugh. I too am hoping to begin to help new players in haven within the next month or so. I've just got to build up me shizzit first.

Dont let the buggers get ya down eh!

I started out on GL 10 yrs ago. It was before Tram/Fel. I was getting ready to quit when Tram came along. It was still bad. My grandson is very intellegent but nieve. He was 6 and bad people would invite him to go hunting with them. We only had one puter so he had no one to play with. They took him into Shame, rounded up a bunch of earth elies, everyone invised and he died and they looted him. When Legends came about, we went there. Nice people for the most part. Since then we have tried different shards. A lot of different shards, but we are back to Legends, again, because they are the nicest people there all in all of any of the others. Come to our world. :)

Sonoma

Sonoma still has a player at Luna whose name starts with "T....." who enjoys finding a young player, guilding them, then killing and looting the young player dry. Like he wants to drive away all new players and close down the game. Because of his behavior the default for new players was changed to "ignore guild invites."

So anyway I can see why you have a hard time on Sonoma. All my chars there have turned on "ignore guild invites."

I applaud your efforts. The only I can say, is don't give up...if you give up, you're just turning into those kinds of people. There are those that are still new to this game and need assistance from folks like yourself!

UO really doesn't have New players, just regular players making new chars or new accounts or vets returning.

They know all the tricks such as guildie killing.

What needs to happen is guildies should not be allowed to attack each other, not even in Fel.

LoL, yep, Sonoma it is.
Well, in an attempt to defend Sonoma people being quick to judge over this, we have a certain guild and guild leader who has a habit of guilding people just for the purpose of killing them. He has been doing it for a long time.

...... And how is that defending them?

In my opinion it's crackpots like that who ruin the game and drive away the small fragment of "new" people that join... There are similar people like that on GL's unfortunately.

Though I'll say this..... I recall when I started playing UO and I was the "newb"... That was many years ago right after UO:R..... was then that I read the manual that came boxed with the game.... it pretty much told you straight up TRUST NO ONE...... be every cautious..... do not speak to anyone.... do not accept any invites... do not go with anyone..... do not enter anyone elses gate ..... on and on and on it went.....

For WEEKS... I was afraid to speak to any other player.... I stayed alone for a very, very, very long time because of that book...

Finally after a long time I started speaking to other players... and most the time if I asked a Question the only answer I got was "Hahahaha! NEWB!!"...

So that didn't much help me to reach out to other players. It wasn't until a year and a half into playing that I joined the local RP community and found that not everyone in the game is there to take you for a ride... some people genuinely do WANT to help.

I say keep at it..... eventually you will get a sense of accomplishment.... I remember once a young blacksmith came to me in the woods and asked me if I would give him 2k... I said 2k??? Why should I give you 2k? And he said I'm trying to learn to be a smith and I need more pickaxes... I said well... ok... so I gave him 2k and never thought another thing of it... then a few months later I was passing by the Brit forge and my young miner/smith came running up and gave me a full valorite heavy archer armor set...... was so sweet....

another time a woman ran up to me and said OMG I've been looking for you for ages! and she handed me a huge bag full of various axes... seems I had assisted her in the woods and helped "save her life" and she wanted desperately to "repay" me....

Even now I find folk whom I've "helped" and they are all very sweet.

ONce in a great while i come across someone who is a complete jerk.. but most times I very much enjoy helping new or old return players.

I said an in attempt to defend Sonoma, not trying to defend the person killing people!

It was an attempt to try to defend the reaction of the Sonoma people who were offered to join an alliance, not the &*^%er who was killing new players and getting others into the guild just to kill them.

It happens... honestly I ignore such problem people and just do what I can.

Some youngs will talk to you, some won't, depends on what they're up to at the time. Plus keep in mind some folks are using trial accounts and may not actually need anything.

Best thing to do is check for any events on the shard and go to them just to start meeting people. At some point you'll run into other old timers that might help you figure out that next stage.

Or if you wanted to try your hand at quest-giving, there are plenty of ingredients you could ask them to quest for to give a person a nice weapon or piece of armor crafted by you, or a nice check.

Truthfully though, you'd probably do better to visit some of the RP towns and get to know folks there, they tend to run into the newbies a bit more quickly. However, they also tend to be cliquish, so you have to be prepared for odd people and the occasional political battles.

Of course you could just pick some odd skills to use and visit weird locations to use them. Like a tinker that makes pretty necklaces and leaves them for the love of his life, who was killed in one of the dungeons. Things like that eventually draw attention to you, for good or for bad.

happily solo and self sufficient since 2000, i play pac and there is quite a bit of highbrow clique style players but these i find are the newer generation of players who either got hand me down accts or bought vet accts and dont realize what we all went through. it could also be vets who see the state of the game and take every meet and greet as a possible "situtation" that involves banter in "leet speak" of who's a noob and who's "scripiting.hence my initial statement.

SO where are the GMs in all this? I mean if enough people complain about the same person for the somethings, you'd think eventually they would be dealt with.

Far as I know being a griefer or a scumbag is completely within the realm of gameplay in UO.... won't make you very many friends.... but there isn't anything EA/UO will do about scum of this sort. Except to tell you that it's not against the ToS and if you page on them again you will get a mark on your account... and it's buyer beware pretty much... so don't join guilds, don't trust anyone, don't talk to anyone everyone else is out scam you trick you cheat you and kill you..... that's the message.... no one wants to be nice or be a part of a community everyone fends for themselves and go ahead and be a jerk off because someone else was a jerk off to you at one point or another in the game...

pardon my rant.... but it's a sore subject to me and I was being totally sarcastic there...

I just wish that it was breaking some "rule" to be a total scuzball and that EA/UO would do something like ban the twit.... but alas... that's not the case...

Deaol - as a resident of one of the other West coast shards, I beg to differ. On my shard, people are a lot more friendlier, and I've seen people (not just myself, but others) give millions of GP-equivalent value to new players, returning players, and even cross-shard transferees looking to stay.

Sonoma may have a rectal chapeaux of a newbie killer, and Pacific might be a little stand-offish from it currently being the only active PvP shard on the west coast, but the other west coast shards are quite friendly places.

The fact that of the west coast shards, LA has had the most people volunteer to do things like write Stratics info, and be staff (And, let's not forget alums like Jamison, Crazy Joe and El, who all had significant LA presence when they still played), is an indication of how NOT like the broad description you paint that the shard is. (IIRC, the east coast shard that seems to be fannish over-achievers in that regard is Chessy)
