From Slashdot.org:
"In a shocking update on the seemingly endless troubles plaguing NCSoft, Richard Garriot — the king of online games, creator of The Ultima Series (and consequentially Ultima Online), as well as the recently troubled Tabula Rasa — has announced that he would be stepping down from his position at NCSoft. Apparently motivated by his recent trip into space, perhaps he has found a higher purpose while orbiting so high above the earth."

I'd be so happy if he joined the UO dev team, but I'm sure he considesr UO behind him and he's always looking forward.

I respect the guy a WHOLE lot. I have been playing Ultima since the late '80s, and I was a huge fan of Origin Systems.

I really hate that he is bailing on a low point. I also hate reading posts about him on the gaming news sites where the comments are full of young gamers who don't know anything about him other than UO and TR... They call him a one hit wonder and much worse.

Yeah, he's had a bad run since UO with UO2 getting canned and with TR flopping. But those don't diminish what he already gave us.

He'll always be "Lord British" to me. And I really hope he comes back to games some day.

- Thx for the info. Setnaffa.

If I were to place a bet, I'd lean towards him focusing more on space than gaming. I believe that is his first true love, even though he has been a successful and influential game developer. In that way, he's kind of a man after mine own heart (but if games existed before I was born, things might've been a bit different in that aspect; very consuming, these games can be) ;)

I'm not surprised in any way. He was already heading in that direction, and seemed to be less and less involved in the actual running of TR.

He seems to enjoy getting the story built and creating everything, but when it comes to actually running his worlds he gets tired of them and moves on to the next big thing.

I think he probably should stick to boxed individual games and forgo the online ones so he won't disappoint his fans as much.

He's got his own life to lead, I won't hold it against him.
