Hey all,
Today I was testing various elements of fishing for UOGuide, and as I did so, I thought about the untapped potential for that expansion, and why it's since slowly become less engaging. Here are a few ideas which I think might help encourage people to set sail once more;
Idea 1: A Pirate Hunting Reputation System
At present, the rewards for pirate hunting remain rather pathetic, and the damage done to your ship and the use of cannon firing materials quickly makes it uneconomic. But what if there was both a way to make it exciting in the shorter term, and allow some sense of progression to your activities?
Here's how it could work. Firstly, upon completion of the mission, some of the NPCs at Sea Market will spend the day declaring that "So and So took down Peg Face Pete, the seas are safe once more"; or a notice board at Sea Market is updated to declare their fame... Maybe even have it so randomly when they enter the tavern at the Market, an NPC buys them a drink (speech declaring "Good on ya buddy! This one's on me for taking down that Pirate!", ale spawns in backpack)
Currently, everyone who did damage has the 10k gold divided between them, and gains a reward. Leave that as is, but pinch the Void Pool mechanic to record people's Pirate "Score" for returning Death Certificates and give them points towards that too. Then allow them to buy rewards from Sea Market for their efforts with those points.
As a rough sketch, going from cheapest to most expensive, the reward table could look like this;
1.) A Sash declaring themselves "Pirate Hunter"
2.) A box of cannon firing materials (Charge, Fuse, Fire and Freeze Cannonballs)
3.) A light cannon
4.) A heavy cannon
5.) An Ork Ship Part of your choice (this eliminates the risk of people still not bothering and allows you to fill in gaps in your set)
6.) Custom, permanent paint of your choice for the ship; make it different from the Captain's Bundle colours to avoid ruining their values.
7.) Custom cannon; there's already unused artwork in the client for a cannon, allow people to unlock a few more designs for more customization.
8.) Custom flag for your Main Mast, declaring you loved by Sea Market... or the realm. Ankh Flag, Fish Flag, give the person a choice of designs...
This is all a bit goody goody though isn't it? Let's give the option to those who roleplay negative or pirate characters as well.... So mirror the system in Buccaneers Den for those who hunt the blue NPC ships instead. Sea scallywags get beer bought for them in that city instead. Change the "Pirate Hunter" sash to "Yaaargh We Loot The Seas" or something fun, and the flag to the various historical Skull And Crossbones. If there's time, perhaps design some more scurvy dog style artwork for pirate looking cannon and paint and slot them into 6 and 7 too.
If there's REALLY commitment to the idea, add a final reward of a unique new ship into a slot 9... a pirate galleon and a pirate hunting frigate!
So that's the first idea... do discuss thoughts!
Idea 2: Fish Hunting Lodges
Testing whether aquarium fish can be mounted (they can't) and discovering that you can only move the multi-tile fish trophies middle' parts, which breaks the trophy, I realised it's impossible to display all the mountable fish in any reasonable size house. And sadly the google docs here on Stratics seem to have stop being updated, so people have no real impetus to challenge their fish sizes. But what if there was a place dedicated to showing off the shards biggest fishes?
Doing it on the cheap; The EMs on each shard are allowed to design and place one extra house, dedicated to mounting Fish Trophies. Everyone submits their biggest catch of each type, and they display the best for public awe and bowing before. The main problems with that method is that it won't be as widely known as something the players can find for themselves like the new Casino, and returning the previous record holder when it's surpassed, because I suspect people will want their personal achievements for their own homes even if it's no longer the best...
Doing it the nicer way; Personally, I'd love to see a new permanent "Ship" added to the map, near Sea Market, dedicated to the art of fishing. Code it so there's a deposit box like Moonglow Zoo where people can drop the fish (or fishing trophy) in, and it's automatically added to a fixed spot on the ships walls somewhere if it's the largest. And they can right click the box and "Reclaim Fish" for those that have since been beaten. That may be tricky to code, but tie it to the account to get around that?
If a boat is too much to code, or can't be done in a visually appealing way, extend Sea Market or put individual poles up around it, with each Fish mounted on the pole.
And why stop there? For those creatures already with trophies craftable (Bears, hinds etc), switch it from targetting the body when making a trophy, to a head dropping on the corpse which is then treated like a mountable fish, with the weight and date included, and make a hunting lodge somewhere on the mainland that does the same thing... Yew maybe?
Idea 3: Fix The Flappin' Fishin' Rewards
Because... No. Just... NO.
