Hey all I am returnin to UO after about a 3 year break or so and wanting to get back into the tamin gig. My old age however has let me forget a lot of things lol.

Curious as to what all builds there are out there for tamers (mage/bard etc)
Currently my toon is sitting at

100 taming
120 lore
100 vet
105 mage
105 eval
100 medi
90 wrestling
all of these are unmodified by items atm

Im pretty much strickly a pvm kinda guy (too slow for pvp) and was hoping to get some suggestions on what to keep/increase/dicard/replace etc.

Also gear wise i have a LRC 100% and roughly 600-700 luck suit...anything out there that is just a MUST for tamers?

Bonded pets are
Cu
Greater Dragon
Nightmare
Beetle
Firesteed
and whitewurm

At minimum, you need to raise taming to 110 (adjusted is fine - doesn't have to be real skill).

What type of PvM do you like? And how much do you want to adjust your template? My favorite peerless template is mage/spellweaver/tamer; my favorite champ spawn template is mage/necro/tamer. Some folks like mage/disco (or peace or provoke)/tamers. I'm not a big fan of bard/tamers, but some people swear by them. If you let me know which template you're interested in, I can help you with the numbers.

On your suit, mods > resists. How you build it will depend on which template you choose. At minimum, 100 lrc and 40 lower mana cost (lmc). Having 10-12 mana regen (mr) is also desirable.

On pets...what style do you like? Do you like using tanks or pairs? Greater dragon and cu sidhe are the tanks of choice at the moment. The most popular combos typically include a combo of dread, rune beetle, mare, or bake. WW is a bit outdated: its low fire resist make it undesirable. Firesteed...no.

I hate bard taming and prefer to stay mage/tam....i honestly do not know what i will end up doing more of atm...i like to solo paragons, but would also like to get my hands in on doing peerless/champ spawns. (peerless and new dungeons coming out more than anything)

As far as pets i like to mix it up a bit between solo and dbl....i just take whats best suited for the current task normally...although more as of late been taking the GD or Cu out as it seems to be the most effective.

Will raise taming (scroll up to 120 prolly)

Well, for purely tram PvM tamer suit, you make piece one together pretty easy.

Kasa of the ra-jin
Pendant of the Maji
Rune Beetle Carapace
Stitcher's Mittens (if you're not elf, consider switching)
Birds of Britannia tally (if you need the extra +5 taming)
Chaos Museum of Vesper replica shield
Tome of Lost Knowledge (drop real mage to 100 and this'll bump you to 115)
Custom arms and legs with resists and whatever lmc/lmc/mr you need.

You want to have 2 faster casting 6 faster cast recovery (2/6) for a mage. Hence, when you're choosing which jewels to wear, you'll want them to total 1/4 (chaos shield has 1/2).

what about stat wise? Does dex effect vet? Also im very confused with luck...am i suppose to worry about getting that up decently high or?

Thoughts so far on spec (unmodified)

120 tam
120 vet
120 lore
100 mage (to take to 115/120 with gear do i need to have it scrolled?)
100 eval
that leaves me with 160 pnts left between meditation and spellweave....should i take something else lower to put more into these two to get them to at least 100 or?

tyvm for all the info so far

Leave Dex at 10 it does nothing for you. 120str, 10dex, 125int is what i run on my tamer.

Well some ppl say luck doesnt matter, i say it does! Anyway it suffers from diminishing returns so the more luck you get the lesser is the effect of eacch point of luck. Luck LRC pieces is rather expensive and so is the artifacts needed.
The most common luck suits includes, Jester hat of chuckles, Leuricans Mempo of fortune, armor of fortune, Robe of the eclipse, Swords of prosperity and the Blue jewels set.
600 luck will do you good, just try to raise it when you get the opurtunity. No need to rush it.

Do i need to have it scrolled?
Yes. Even if you use an item to bring you up to 115/120 you still need to eat or have eaten the oproriate scroll.

120 tam
120 vet
120 lore
100 mage (to take to 115/120 with gear do i need to have it scrolled?)
100 eval
So okey, template time! This is the reall problem cause most of it is up to you, not to me or anyone ellse on these boards.
Many ppl will differ with me when it comes to tamer templates since i rarely have VET on my tamers. However i will have to think that you want Taming/vet/lore/mage. I would probably just go with a pure mage tamer if i were you, ie go with Eval and meditation.

Normaly i want 120 defens and 120 resist, but i dont think that its need for you to begin with ;)

I wouldn't worry about scrolling to 120 mage, unless you're planning to use a mage weapon, in which case you'll plan to spend between 80-100 mil for inquis, crystalline ring, ornament of the magician, and -25 (or less) mage weapon with no casting penalty. For PvM, keep it simple and cheap: 110 or 115 is plenty for reliable rezing.

If you wanna run a weaver/tamer, I've used a couple templates:

My first temp used 120 taming/lore/vet, so eval int suffered
120 taming
120 lore
120 vet
110 weaving
100 mage (115 with tome of lost knowledge)
100 med
50 eval

My second template (one I helped my wife with) allowed for more eval:
115 lore (+5 from birds of brit)
110 taming (+5 from birds of brit)
110 vet
105 weaving (you still cast WOD fairly reliably, every other time or so)
105 mage (with tome of lost knowledge, so 90 base)
100 med
100 eval

Obviously, the more skill jewels you wear, the more room you'll have to add to eval, mage, or whatever skills you'd like to beef up.

Now, keep one thing in mind when building a weaver: its REALLY helpful to have 4/6 casting. You can use the same suit I noted above, but use these jewels: ornament of the magician and a ring with taming and 1/1 fc/fcr.

You could allso use the 1/2 museum Shield or Arcane shield. You could even run SoP or SoM for defense.

Right. I meant to refer to the suit I detailed above. Let me combine it all:

Kasa of the ra-jin
Pendant of the Maji
Rune Beetle Carapace
Stitcher's Mittens (if you're not elf, consider switching)
Birds of Britannia tally (if you need the extra +5 taming)
Chaos Museum of Vesper replica shield
Tome of Lost Knowledge (drop real mage to 100 and this'll bump you to 115)
Ornament of the magician
Ring: taming, 1 fc, 1 fcr

Custom arms and legs that bring you to 100 lrc, 40 lmc, and as much mr as possible.

If you wanted a cheap but go-anywhere general purpose mage template, I'd suggest adding GM hide and 70+ stealth into your template.

What I did to make that template more versatile was add herding, and I soulstone between that and eval. It means I can stealth around pet spawns looking for new pets, then use herding to pull the pet out somewhere suitable to tame it. You can also use the herding to move your own pets around which I find handy around paragons :)

You won't do as much damage with a stealth herder compared to other hybrid templates, but you will be very hard to kill. And it's handy to be able to scout for danger before you and your pets walk into it.

If you are up for it i gladly show you how i can solo a paragon balron nakkied on my disco tamer :) Gear is so overrated :)

But i guess that won't help you alot :)
So here is a little help.

If you dont tame alot. Eg go hunt for CU's GD's etc etc.
Then you dont really need more than, 110 taming / 110 lore to control a GD.
Most people use them, and so should you.

And yes you should train taming to 110, because it gives you alot of other options regarding gear. And you should lower lore to 110 as well. There is an exception to this rule thou. If you command your'e pet alot. Eg all kill, all follow, bla bla, then there is more chances that youre pet looses loyalty.

Regarding gear (pvm)
Hard to give any advice, unless you tell us what you are wearing, but as others suggested, G-tots, should be fairly easy to buy.

Least but very importand, join a guild, so you can meet new people and have fun :)

I dont really plan on going out to tame a bunch of cu and gds as both that i have are increadably well trained with high stat values so im good there. I do however while im out killn solo/with a friend issue alot of commands to my pet....was thinking about bringing both lore and taming to 115 and using the library totem to cap that at 120 (already scrolled from way back).

Gear wise i dont have anything uber special just minor rares..out of everything suggested i only have pendant of the magi..have armor of fortune but is about it good special pcs...rest is just crafted lrc/luck set from my tailor. I did question the Raj-in and stichers mittens (just seemed to be a wasted slot for just LRC...or am i missing something else?)

here is what im thinking for pvm dungeons (if i can get the right pcs)

115 lore/taming (120 with totem)
120 vet
110 weaving
100 mage (115-120 modified) or 90 (110+ modified to add more into eval)
100 meditate
60+eval (modified)
may switch meditate and eval numbers around

while maintaining 2/6 or 4/6 (for weaving)

idk if i can pull this off or not but its the goal....plus with SA coming out hoping that will get some good new arti's from there +imbue

Looks good, pal. :)

What shard do you play on? If you're on Atlantic, grab any UWFer and ask for Fallon, if you want additional help.

Ha, small world! I remember you, yes. I think I still have your ICQ, in fact.

I'm in Mexico atm. When I get back next week, it'd be fun to go kill some stuff. You could even try out a UWF hunt, if you'd like. I lead Monday nights. I'll probably do either Ilsh/tok champs or beetlescape, depending on the group.

I get back next Sunday. Wow, small world...lol. Is the house working ok?
