Returning Tamer looking for advice.

Hi there I have been out of the game for a long while, I was wondering what are the pets I should be looking at to bring myself bang up to date?

At the moment I have a White Wyrms and Nightmares.

Also can you tell me where I need to go to find the current crop of 'Best' pets, and where the best hunting is found so I can build up some cash again.

Rune Beetles

Have bleed attack , corrupt armor, poisoning (> 100) and magery.
Very hard to tame but well worth it . They take 3 slots and cannot be ridden.
A combo run beetle + nightmare is a killer

Cu sidhes

Can heal themselves, have bleed attack. take 4 slots and can be ridden.
You have to be an elf to tame one but can control one as human with the pads of the Cu Sidhe (artie). It's not aggressive as long as you don't "anger" it while taming. With peace it's a piece of cake to tame one (use area peace)

Greater Dragon

Is a very very very strong dragon.Wresting, tactics, resisting spells and magery can go up to 120 after taming and training
Is extremly hard to tame and takes 5 slots.

You can also go for a Bake Kitsune, it's easier to tame than a beetle and a GD and a couple of those can be powerful to hunt with

Don't use paralyze on the Rune beetles and GD to tame as they would loose part of their skill bonus.
The easiest way is to raise Honor and use self Honor to tame the dangerous critter

A nice spot to train your Cu Sidhe, gain Honor and farm money and items is the fan dancer Dojo, go to the last level and hunt Succubus

I like the Bake kitsune for newbie tamers because with very little real trained taming ability, you can tame one. And they are very strong little pets. They take 80.1 minimum, you can have an imbuer friend create two +13 taming rings for you, and with as little as 55 trained skill you can begin trying to tame one.

the Britain Library Birds of Britania +5 Taming/lore talisman will boost minimum skill required even lower!

I managed to tame a CU Sidhe, took a few attempts and a lot of deaths, even with 112 taming 115 Lore and 115 peacemaking, no idea what I was doing wrong but I angered it almost ever attempt.

It's normal with Cu's With 120 taming and lore I anger them most of the time.

My tactic with a peace tamer : a macro with tame stored+ peace self if you use en enhanced client.
With the 2D client I don't know how to do it but what it does is try to tame the pet you selected and if you anger it, cast immediately area peace. Most of the time the Cu doesn't have time to attack before being paced. As he's not aggressive, area peace is enough for it to become pacific again.

Of course sometimes I'm too close or the Cu is faster than the macro and I'm hit. If it's not a bleed attack, no problem, the area peace will calm the pet and I can heal myself while trying to tame again.
If it's a bleed, the area is useless because as long as you bleed you're being damaged by the Cu and he is "aggroing" you again. Just run out in the cave and wait for the bleed to stop, heal and go back.

You can ride the unicorn if the beetle is too damaged, but I don't think a single unicorn is able to kill one even using peace. Of course I never tried so I could be wrong.

Be careful to lure the beetle in a safer area, I found that the coast south of the spot where you find the beetles is always empty.

I'm 120 peace and just peace and tame the Runes, I use a trained mare to kill off the runes I dont want, this has worked for me, I do get hit pretty hard some times but I'm always able to get away.

You could also let the cu's aggro work to your favor and lead-tame it. I find this is a lot more time efficient than peacing over and over until a tame attempt doesn't aggro the pup, as they tend to aggro most of the time! It's also better than paralyze methods, in my opinion, because you won't lose any valuable stats on the pup from sublimation.

Set up a macro or use the enhanced client's targeting to perform a tame attempt on the current target (the cu). Assign it to a hotkey. Walk up to the cu and start pressing the hotkey repeatedly to get a tame attempt, while simultaneously walking away from the cu (because it will typically aggro on the first attempt and come after you). Stay 2 paces in front of the cu as it follows you around. Once your tame attempt sticks, you can quit pressing the taming hotkey and just keep walking, 2 paces ahead. The tame attempt will either succeed or fail, and if it fails, you can either start spamming that taming macro again and continue walking, or hit your area peace key and end the session.

It usually takes a few deaths before you get the feel for the speed of the cu and the ways in which they turn corners, but once you have a feel for it, it's the fastest way to tame them. I have a set path that I use around the Twisted Wield, and using that same path every time also helps prevent deaths, because you can get used to specifically how the cu moves through that path with you.

Another alternative taming method is honor taming.

honor yourself, and monsters won't aggro on you, including the cu sidhe when you anger it. Then just tame away.

Here's how I do Cu's:

Culling the weak Cu's:

-Para tame and then sick it on Swoop or another Cu to get rid of it

Taming a keeper Cu:

-Lead tame, Ethereal Journey tame, or Honor tame it


Rune beetles seem such a pain. My newest GD died fighting 2 of them, but it wasn't fully trained.

What's the best location and way to cycle/cull through Beetles? I don't want to bond unicorns, they seem too weak.

Last time I did a big bettle hunt I alternated between a stealth herder scouting through the spawn looking for a keeper and herding it to a quiet taming spot, and my disco/provo tamer went in from the coast alongside the champ spawn to work the spawn before taming it. I preferred the provo tamer, but you do need your wits about you to work in the thick of the spawn with the odd ninja in wait

If I'm beating up runeys I use a normal nightmare and the odd EV depending how gutsy the runey is. Though the last few bugs I've tamed healed up so fast I just lead tamed them on full health. Eat orange petals to save yourself having to cure cast poison and they're no tougher than any other casting pet. Unless you let yourself get within range of their teeth of course
