Returning player need advice.

I left sometime around 2006, I have a few old pets no mares or gdrags but have an old rune beetle and a few fire steeds. I play an old necro tamer build and mainly used it for spawns and defending spawns. My questions I guess are, are these pets different from what spawns now and how should I train them to be effective tanks and pvp?
