Returning mage with questions

Hey all.

I have just come back to UO. I last played in 1999 so there is a ALOT of new stuff! (obviously)

Im so incredibly confused about mage armor. My mage when I left is

Magery 100
Eval Int 100
Meditation 100
Inscription 100
Tactics 100
Wrestling 95ish
Resist 75ish

What type of PvP mage can I make with this guy? Which skills will be important?

What about mage armor? There is armor now that allows you to cast with zero reagents? All spells? How about inscription/making scrolls?

Also some mage armor allows you to use less mana? And allows you to meditate in armor as well?

I know there are some big topics in there, so I would even appreciate links to more detailed discussions on some of the bigger things if possible. I tried reading up on UOguide and here on stratics but I couldnt find anything comprehensive or definitive.

I know for starters Im going to need to get a +20 Magery scroll, and then.......Im lost lol!

Thanks!

first of all, you need to get 100% LRC (Low Reagent Cost) medable armor (i.e leather armor + exceptionally crafted metal armor parts (like mempo))

LRC does not affect Inscription, Inscription now gives +10% SDI (Spell Damage Increase).

LMC (Low Mana Cost), capped at 40%, is also handy.

I'd ditch Tactics (you dont need it to do special moves with wrestling) and use powerscrolls to get remaining skills to 120 (if you have a bunch of money) or to 115 (if not).

Magery 120
Eval Int 120
Meditation 120
Inscription 100
Wrestling 120
Resist 120

If you get Crystalline Ring, you can gain Focus up to 20 (with ring it will be 40) -- extra mana regen points.

Mage Armor is a property that will make any non-medable armor (plate, studded leather, bone, etc..) medable. You will be able to use Meditation just as like you were wearing leather armor or plain clothing.

Lower Mana Cost (LMC) will reduce the amout of mana it takes to cast a spell. It is capped at a maximum of 40%. LMC has no bearing on the mana required to scribe scrolls.

Lower Reagent Cost (LRC) will reduce your reagent consumption buring spellcasting, up to 100%. Your reagents will last longer with LRC, up to not requiring to cary any at 100% (for chivalry you will still need the correct amount of tithing points, but they will not be consumed at 100% LRC). LRC has no bearing on the amount of reagents required to scribe scrolls. LRC does not effect Arcane Clothing.

As Mage you will also want to know about Spell Damage Increase, Defence Chance Increase, Mage Weapon, Spell Channeling, Faster Casting, Faster Cast Recovery. You can find the descriptions here:Item Properties

What Rouss describes up there is the standard Scribe mage template.
Try that, use 115's scroll's if you can't afford 120's. If you can only afford 1 x 120 scroll make it wrestling, this means you've got less chance of getting hit.

Get rid of Tactics.

Thanks for the info so far guys!

So with the standard scribe mage template, there is no resist spells?

If I use a +15 PS for starters, can I go back later and add a +20 to get me the last 5 points or once I do it is it for good?

Why do I need wrestling again? Obviously at one point I understood why a mage wanted wrestling but that was 10 years ago. :p

How about +stat scrolls? I see ones that give +20, or even +25 stats. Is that beneficial? Int is 125, Str is 80, Dex is....20? Something close to that I think.

Thanks again!!!

The standard scribe mage does have Resist.
If you used a 115 scroll now you can top it up with a 120 at any point.
You need Wrestling as a defensive skill. i,e to stop getting hit as much.
+25 stat scroll is best you can get, so very desirable.
I'd personally have my Dex alot higher than 20 because if you get beaten on by a dexxer and run out of refresh pots you'll have no stamina left to move.

If I were you, I'd consider transferring Inscription to another character and add Necromancy or Spellweaving instead. The Inscription bonus is minimal, while those other two skills add a lot to your mage's abilities.

Interesting. Can you give more details or specifics??
