Request for a small herding buff

So, I have been enjoying a bit of herding of late and thought it might be nice if one had herding with, say animal lore, that animals that normally are aggressive would be less likely to attack. I don't know how it would work exactly, but something along the lines of: if the animal is tamable, and the herder has high enough herding and animal lore, there would be a chance that the creature will not attack the herder. Everything else would remain the same. The herder would still be unable to command the animal.

Any thoughts?

Yes, I can imagine stealth would add a good amount of fun.
I take it since not a single person has objected to the original post, either they agree with it or they don't care one way or another.
I suspect it's the latter.

In either case, since no one objects, let's do it!

I would see this becoming herding as the most soulstoned skill for tamers.

Personally, if I would be tasked with changing herding I'd have it act as a buff for tamed creatures.

Maybe every two points of herding would raise your tamed creatures hit points by one, up to 50 hit points (GM skill). This actually then would allow players to utilize lower end pets better to play with and with give a decent boost to larger pets.

I like this idea too. With pack hunting you could get a total of 250 hits extra. Nice.

I think that's a great idea. Like a passive chance for a greater dragon, for example, to change an "anger" response into one of complacency while you try to tame.

I'm not sure how it would work if the passive happened all the time, though. Then dexxers might pick it up hahaha :) for some PvP.

While I haven't made a dexxer character yet, I can't imagine where one might fit both animal lore and herding into a fighter's template. Indeed, even with stealth, hiding, and herding there isn't much room left for a complete character. But yeah, if you can fit it, I say go for it.

Integrated into a tamer template, herding should be able to bring at least a small 'extra' to the template over and above its stand-alone ability. I am encouraged that no one yet has made a negative argument against it. Perhaps someone important will stumble across this thread and pass it along to the right people.

stealth can be fit on almost any character due to the immense amount of skill gain items for stealth(more skill gain available for stealth than any other skill).

This assumes, of course, one has said items at one's disposal. In my case, for example, I have seen an odd ring or bracelet with stealth, but nothing else. Albeit I am a new player, I can't imagine I am the only person who doesn't have gm stealth sitting in a chest of items somewhere. Nevertheless, your point is taken.

As far as the linking of herding to animal lore, I was looking at the skill within its own category of skills to see if it might be useful or interesting. Turns out that it may very well be.

I think herding should be a seperate taming-like skill.

I would love if herding allowed large groups of weaker tameables to be viable in combat. Basically, if a herder tamed 5 hell hounds, they pooled health and resists and when in combat they each took a percentage of the total damage.

I imagine this would make for a fun way to hunt with pets ... imagine tailoring a group of tameables (3+) to the mob you are going to hunt.

Now, i think herding would have to be, what, 30 points of skill (relative) less than taming? Basically, a 120 herder would have 90 effective taming. This would make herding easier to balance against taming. Taming would be for one or two large, very powerful creatures, and herding would be 3+ small effective mobs.

Obviously, this idea has holes in it ... it is just one guys idea and hasnt, to this point, had the benefit of other people's input at this point. That said, i think it could be a fun addition once fully realized.

... My mongbat army will one day be relevant!
