5 escort quests per 24hours for gains in compassion? seems lame to me, but you can do them all day for the gold, bah.

I always wondered why it was there in the first place considering that it originally was a change for the just-opened Siege to slow down people in the early stages (at the time you could escort as many as you could find, so they dropped it to one at a time and added the timer).

Yeah I forgot all about the escort trains to gain gold. Just like the aspiring tamer trains that usually ended up at WBB as tamers sold ridable mounts (ie horses and ostis of different colors) back in the day when not everyone was riding around on undead horses and etherals.
The one escort in the Orc caves has no timer. You can do the 5 pretty quick if nobody else is camping them. They should just get rid of the timer for all escorts and lower the gold so they cant be farmed all day if people planned to do that.
The prisoner escort in the Orc Caves was recently changed to match the other escort quests with their five minute timer.
If the reward of 500 gold is an issue (???) then limit escort runs to five per day similar to the compassion gains.

Or just lower the gold reward.
That's a good idea, maybe the more you do the less gold you get until it resets or builds back up.
On a related note, it sure would be nice to see a revamp of all the virtue quests.

Some good ideas in this thread. I think capping the number one can do per day is fine, just remove the timer please. I used to enjoy having my virtues worked up.
I thought the timer was put in before the Compassion thing. But then, it was a long time ago and the memory isn't what it should be.
500 gps now, bleh, who really cares? As I recall one dev stating, they put it in partly to stop us from farming gold off of it. Remember, in the pre and circa T2A days, gold was gold, and any amount was worth making or looting.

So 20 minutes is too much to invest? Doesn't sound very virtuous. Perhaps it should be called compassion and a smidgen of patience.

It was, it was put in when Siege opened to slow down people who used it to gain starting gold, both the timer and the limit of one were put in due to Siege.

Yes, remove the timers. If somebody wants to go do Compassion all day long, they should be able to. If that's how they want to make money, by escorting and saving NPCs, sounds pretty virtueous.
You could probably gate NPCs for 1 year, non stop and still not make as much money as one item sells for. I did not really understand the reason for the change in the first place. People were making money gating NPCs. What's wrong with doing that?
Only thing that I didn't like, that bothered me, was a guy would come through the gate with 20 naked people following him but you had to respect somebody who was willing to go that far to make some gp, at least they were actually playing the game. Why do people make the decision to tell people to stop playing the game? It doesn't make any sense. Gate 5 NPCs and you're done for the day, come back tomorrow.
What about all the time that it takes to do the Virtues and for what? Nothing. I take my tamer out, work it for a week straight and then decide i'll go work Honor, a week later I go back, log my tamer in, guess what, it was a big waste of time and forget about my mage because if the tamer is at zero then the mage is going to be at zero, too. Tell me why I would bother working the other 5 characters and this is just one Virtue at a time. What if someone had the crazy idea, they could be like the Avatar?
I don't see why we should lose something we haven't used, yet we had to work for it. In my book, that's getting ripped off and that doesn't give me a very virtueous attitude, but who cares. We don't have to do it if we don't want to, right?

Just do away with the timer. I don't do escorts or compassion but if it helps others why not. Once upon a time (lol) you could get rich way to fast with escorts so the yput a limit in. Nowdays the 500gp reward is tiny compared to what monsters have. I wouldn't even bother changing the gold table.

I do the Haven quests on other shards to get gold to get started often on quite a few shards. It's a fantastic asset for people who want to start a fresh character without assistance and something I really enjoy doing.
I don't think people mind devoting time to doing the quests so much as the wasted time between quests.

I had a 'Escort Mage'. She went through her rune BAG <no books then> town by town, making a circle through each town screaming "Destination?" F5 key
And yelling back "I will Take Thee" F6 key
As I remember, South Jhelom, Ocllo and Nu'Jhelom were by far the best spots.

Remembers me of funny ol' times... really had to wonder when I found this old screenie: what kind of template was this? Look at all this crap in my bag... an archer tankmage tailor? rolleyes: You can even see the trapped rune box - no rune books back then!
Although I don't think I would immediately resume this play style from 1998, my vote goes for the timer removal. Leave it at one escort at a time.

"Rescue" escorts didn't have a timer (be they in the orc mines, rescued from brigands, or the rarer orc-held prisoners) until that recent change.
Prior to the change in the quest system with ML, you could have as many rescued prisoners in tow as you wanted, plus one "for hire" escort from a town. Granted, back then, escorts wouldn't go through moongates, and were a bit finicky with server boundaries (you couldn't get them to entor or leave dungeons, but could walk them across normal terrain lines if you moved slowly. You still only got compassion from the first 5.
So, that pic could have been as recent as the August before ML launched (2006).
I know my personal best was picking up a normal escort and 4 rescues on Trinsic Barrier Island, walking the horde up to Britain (across one server line), delivering the normal one and one the rescues, picking up another normal escort, then walking them north through the swamp (crossing another line), picking up 2 more rescues, then down to Cove (dropping off one), then around the Avarice mountains clockwise to Minoc (delivering 2, with one of the remaining disappearing in route, literally a screen from the dropoff), then across the Minoc server line to Vesper to drop off the last two (if I'm counting correctly, that left one, that disappeared crossing the Minoc/Vesper line). That was in the spring before ML.

Not sure that solves anything. I am talking about being able to do compassion quests more quickly.

Umm this was the work around.. You problem was that it is taking too long to get you daily fill of compassion. ONE potion does that.. No need to do the quest at all. The gold is and issue and this was the fix. Also allowed those willing to get them to make a profit and sell the item.

I've stated why I enjoy doing the quests in a post above.
I asked if the issue was that people were gaining compassion to quickly or if 500 gold was too much of a reward.
I have no desire to drink a potion to gain compassion. That just seems silly to me. I'd rather have the timer removed.

There are MUCH quicker ways to get 500 gold+ a pop. I can understand the one-at-a-time restriction, but the timer is just dumb on the non-Siege shards.

On a naked newly created character?
Yeah, you hand it to them off of your established characters.
Seriously though, they do serve a purpose for new accounts or those trying to approach character development like it was a new account.
How about 1 minute and 100 gold? Changes the dynamic where you actually have to play to get the gold, not just stand around waiting.

Try over on Origin ... talk to some of the Originals (if any persist)
Pre Origin ... there were quite a few different methods of twinking a character gold and housing.
IIRC the test shard that became origin, was when the "advanced character" templates were in testing prior to the cash offer.
I mention that because the "skills" you manage to build up effect the GP rates you can reach.
More to the point: the idle time between escorts ... what are you doing? there's gp to be picked up & 0.1 skill gains to be had.
not to mention interaction with others ... *wink*
was going to say compassion sage but it seems someone else did already so umm yeah wait for 5 min and work on some skills in the mean time or other quests theres plenty to choose from.
