Regarding dragons and their past in UO

The new super dragon makes me think of old times.
When i started to playe UO dragons where extremely dangerous, but they got one thing that balanced it out very much and it was that they easily and often
just turned against their owners and killed them.
Whit the great power the danger followed it.

I like that way and would love to se some simular to day.
If your drag turns against you and kills you you lose all your stuff and whats in your bag pack.

If I remember correctly the reason Dragons and Wyrms would turn against their master was because of the Mass Curse spell and the original Felucca facet rules. This was more common with Wyrms because they started with naturally high Magery where as a Dragon, as well as any other magic pet, had to be trained. Unless the dragons stats were compairable to an ancient wyrm, didn't devided by half when tamed and they only required 3 control slots would your "turn against their master" ever be viable.

Risk VS Reward these dragons are not worth it unless your a diehard dragon fan whose been waiting for a stronger dragon.

So you're basically saying you want the devs to re-introduce a bug?

In early UO dragons didn't attack on sight, so you could pull up a stool and tame them easily. You could also have as many as you wanted.

The relative power of greater dragons to players today is higher than the relative power from players to dragons has ever been before. The greater dragons are MEAN.

I'm not sure if you've fought one yet, but if you're not wearing enough fire resist, their fireballs will kill you instantly. Even in a maxed out suit, you can die instantly if you are hit by a fire breath and a bite at the same time.

Most of the new dragons are 160 bard difficulty, which greatly reduces the effectiveness of bard skills. In early UO, you just had to have 200 skill pts (100 music 100 provoke) and you could easily kill 8 dragons at a time. I used to hunt dragons like that all the time and I would NEVER fail a provoke. It's not like that with the new dragons. Even with 120/120 music/provoke and a slayer instrument (something you didn't need before) you will fail provoking the new dragons pretty regularly.

In early UO your HP was the same as your STR. I could easily kill 8 dragons at a time with 25 str on my character. These dragons are a lot more challenging than the old dragons...

Taming these dragons is generally harder than taming the old ones was. Even when they made the old dragons attack on sight, you were never really in that much danger if you wore a decent suit. It's a LOT easier to lead tame while mounted than it is to lead tame on foot. Yes, you can use the honor virtue to honor tame them easily, but it's a pain to work honor back up. I just lead tame them.

So anyway... I thought it would be good to point out a more realistic comparisson from old dragons to new ones because you weren't doing that. These new dragons are a totally different critter.

Did Dragons ever use mass curse? I thought it was just White Wyrms...hm I'm forgetting now, hehe

It was just WWs that did the mass curse. Draggies you were safe with. But you'd have some hilarious hunts if you took 2 WWs together lol. I really miss mass curse. People didn't invade my WW's personal space like the do now

[/ QUOTE ]Dragons and other magical critters were safe because, like today, they were tamed with low Magery skill. However, White Wyrms still and have always been tamed with near GM Magery. This could probubly have been confirmed on a more solid basis if the only way of judging a pets Magery skill had not been wether or not it could enter the city of Wind.

Unfortunately, some Nato-PK's (PK's who used tactics to kill you that didn't involve them getting a murder count) got to me and my dragon I had been training for a while before I could get him to enter Wind, but he was definately stronger than other Dragons.

I don't believe it was anything to do with the pet's magery skill. WWs just cast mass curse and dragon's couldn't. Otherwise when the change was announced about WWs no longer cursing, they'd have mentioned dragons too. Not once did I hear of a draggy casting mass curse and I knew a lot of tamers back then, so I'd be amazed if they all missed something like that

*cough* After wiping out my entire guild on a group hunt/quest in the ratman area of Ice Dungeon with my massively mass cursing WW, I deliberately began using a dragon (yup one lone singular dragon even though there was no follower limits) instead because they didn't mass curse.

My mentor never let me live that one down...

Personally I never knew anybody who had a Non-WW able to enter Wind, did either of you? It was no easy task to train a pet to that level and I'm still convenced Magery skill was a factor in this. With unlimmited pets, no bonding and a constant PK threat those who would actually set asside the time to train a single magical critter were few and far between.

Aye, my draggy got in fine too, but I can't remember how well trained he was. Most of mine were virtually done when bonding came in, but I was a careful owner
I kept stunt pets alongside my favourites, but towards the end even my PK hunters were well trained lol. Once they got to a certain strength, so long as you kept your cool, they could give a red a nasty surprise. Not always a kill, but often enough distraction that I could pop open a gate and pull pets out.

To enter wind whit a pet it needs to have 70,1 magery and 20 INT.
Could be 72,1 magery to i don't remember.

When using the honor virtue to tame one of these dragons, do you honor yourself before the actual taming sequence has started, or after?

[/ QUOTE ]Honoring yourself keeps critters from attacking you, so do it before.
