I think the key thing here is that the pets and gold go poof after a week of being unclaimed??

the page I linked to says: The broker’s former employer has one week to reclaim those animals or commodities, and funds. To claim these goods, visit a Warehouse Superintendant and ask to retrieve your items.

So yes, after a week, you've lost them.
