Recently Reactivated --- How to tame the more difficult stuff?

Ok sooo, I have 120 taming, 107 lore, 100 of each vet, peace, music, medi, magery...

I just found out that you can no longer find a nice hill and tame a dragon... something about not having a "clear path". So they changed line of sight on us, okay, fine. But how in the HELL do you tame something like a red dragon or drake or something like that without the line of sight rules that used to be in place?

Can someone please walk me through step by step? Do I have to change my template? I could drop meditation and pick up provoke, but how hard is it to raise provoke now-a-days? etc. etc.

Some guidance is appreciated.

Well, in my opinion you should find a way to get your peace and music up to 120. Then you can use peace to tame most things. The only two you can't peace tame easily that I know of would be greater dragons and cu sidhe. For cu sidhe lead taming isn't too difficult, and it's a useful skill to develop, and for greater dragons you should work on getting your honour up to at least level two, then you can use honour to tame that perfect dragon.

I just beat pets down to a sliver of health and lead tame them. Greater drags are more challenging, but I just make sure I have a good resists suit and take along orange petals to protect against the drag casting poison. I'd suggest you only try that with a greater when you're "up to speed" though, otherwise you'll be toast Casting invis on yourself is also handy to break target with aggressive pets.

I actually para tame most beasties. The only ones I won't are the ones with skills that can be over 100 after taming. For those I lead tame, or use honour.

It is very useful to create a UOA or enhanced client macro that uses the taming skill something like ten times in a row on the same target. It makes starting taming much easier.

I never warmed to para taming. Why drop a critters skills if you don't need to, y'know? I know it's not a big drop, but still And you need eval, ideally med too if you're doing it steadily like working cu spawns. I did para tame cu's for a while but I don't often run with eval on my main tamer and my second account tamers don't have eval between them lol. Serves me right having advanced MTS though.

If you do a search for "honor" in this forum you should find lots of information. This thread is a decent place to start, but I know this question has been asked many times in the past.

And yes, there's a lot to learn in UO. There's a lot of depth to the game.

I would like to add that lore has changed as well. You need at least 110 now.

My spellweaver-Mage-tamer also uses ethereal voyage to tame greater dragons.

I lead tame everything on my mage tamer. -.- Without beating it down, including Greater Dragons.

I'll explain how I do it, and what my basic gear is.

First, I use the EC and I have no idea if this would work in the 2D client.

My gear is all 70 resist gear, especially phys and fire.

The other key is to have 2/6 Faster Casting/Faster Cast Recovery.

Now the only skills I use are invis and tame. I put Invis on a hot bar and set the target to "Cursor". I then put tame on the hot bar and set the target to "Current". In the EC you can right click on the icon in your hotbar to do this.

Next I select the creature I want to tame with the EC targeting enabled. This keeps the creature as my "Current" target. I then pre cast invis, which puts it on my cursor. I then fly in to max tame range and spam my tame macro button.

This is the tricky part and can take some time to figure out when to jump away or stay in. As soon as the tame goes off, I use the precast invis on myself, dropping agro, and immediately cast invis again, and continually cast it on myself until A. I tame the dragon or B. I fail.

Then I just rinse and repeat.

If the dragon does too much damage to you before taming starts, its safe to run off, invis and heal up and go back in. Using this method I have solo tamed all of the agressive tames in the game, including dreadmares when they were around. It also imho makes taming cu's much easier. It takes me under 10 minutes to tame anything, depending on the RNG.

JFYI - This isn't easy to do for everyone. Lag can play a big part in success, as well as just knowing when to stay and when to run. That being said, I have become so good at doing this that unless I get a lag spike, or stuck on some strange piece of terrain, I rarely die doing this method.

Depending on where you're taming, you will still want to try and drag your target to a safe area before starting, especially for stuff that likes to paralyze.

In my opinion the ability to lead tame is what separates the true tamers from the daytrippers. Every tamer should learn how to lead tame, because it is the one tactic you can always fall back on when all else fails. I'm not Sosaria's most skilled lead tamer myself, but I have enough experience with it to be able to fall back on it when all my other tricks fail me.

Llewen, thanks for the link... now reading up on Honor, if I need it, I'll use it, if I get good enough to not need it, I still learned something new.
