I'm not sure if its as a result of the new updates or just coincidence but i use Vista and after the updates it now takes forever to get past the verifying screen. Even when i do get in the lag is allmost unplayable and i'm only training fishing. lost 5 lobster traps due to the fact my char is 'locked' in a half movement while the trap bobs and goes under.
Walking is 2 steps then 3-4 second freeze.
Tested my conn and its the same its been for the last year so no problems there.
Are you shunting UK through a different server now?

Its no just you. and I live in the states. The patch made it very bad on lag entering game.

I sourced the cause of the recent lag problems.
It's the new ships.
I logged in where no new ships were and everything was fine, Once i hit a part where a new ship was being drawn the lag started and didnt stop till i got away from the area and re-logged.

This is on Europa and im using a BT phoneline for broadband (2.5mb)
Tested it in various other places around Europa and it allways seems to be when you come close to a new ship, your stuck with lag till you re-log.

Can a Dev advise?

Have you tried a speed test to see how much of your 2.5mb you're actually getting?

Aye, not to sound pompus but i wouldn't be posting if i had an old crappy computer.
I play UO on an Alienware laptop that can run 3 instances of Counter strike at the same time. ie, very new very powerfull and very over-powered for 2d UO.
I use speed test all the time so i know it's not the line, it sit's at a steady 2.2-2.3mb.

I ask about the server local as once before they changed server from i think it was Germany to USA so UK was bounced thru about 5 servers before hitting the main game server and caused mass lag for peeps in UK.

As far back as i can remember the server location for europa and drachenfels never changed. It has always been the same building in london. The only thing they change is the routing. Currently i get routed via sprintlink to the server. Sometimes it's colt.net but that one is a pain in the ass to route through.

No lag anywhere on europa currently, no matter where iam at. That's from 2 different locations with a different isp (work/home). Pinging below 40ms constantly from germany.

What you are remembering is EA's abortive attempt to use Sprintlink, who thought it was a good idea to route people from mainland Europe to London via Washington DC or New York giving them a ping of around 300 - 400.
It was finally ditched after half of the UK was cut off from a live and active server for 8 hours. My white wyrm went wild in Ankh, which is where I was when the Sprintlink server at the end of the route went down cutting us off. Re-taming it while surrounded by lich lords and rotting corpses was interesting to say the least.
