randomness is dumb...let us choose

i dont like spending an hour fighting the bane only to be rewarded with a bag that contains a worthless junk weapon

why cant the npcs give us medals for our bravery in helping fight in the war and then allow us to turn in the medals for what we want

that way we can actually work towards a goal instead of letting the random number generator decide for us

like 1 medal would give us a potion or relic fragment
5 medals for a jade head or frostguard talisman
10 medals for a shadow cloak or rangers cloak
15 medals for bane dragon egg (double click to create a bane dragon thats automatically bond to you!)
20 medals for warden arms or petrified tongue
50 medals for a full size stuffed ophidian that says i have nothing better to do then fight in a virtual war for silly decoration items

you get the idea
it stinks doing the war ten times and getting nothing while someone else gets the bracers and a cloak
i dont mind doing the war over and over again but i just wish i could choose what i wanted and work towards that goal instead of getting bummed every time i get a stupid bag

Or instead of getting loyalty points alone, we get the same number of participation points that can be saved up toward prizes for whatever side.

I do agree that its nice to know that your time trying to get something wont be wasted.

wow this is probably an even better idea because there are some people that will just sit at the final flag and wait for everyone else to do the dirty work yet they still get to pull from the chest just for being there
really bad design and programming on that one
it doesnt matter if you fight in the war for an hour or if you just come at the last minute and kill one monster the chance at the rewards are the same
this is a huge problem in my opinion

It's not bad programming if it's not buggy and it meets the design. :)

well it is poorly designed then :)
I think the whole army vs army and waves, and line pushing for loyalty is a really nice idea honestly. My only problem with it is the reward set up.

Take siege for example. Very very few people are working this spawn. I was all by my lonesome for an entire evening (like midnight to 5) pushing the spawn with my sampire, and I wasn't able to push the bane back to their base. I had like a flag to go.

So pretty much singlehanded I pushed the back back for the ophids, and I didn't even get a chance at a random reward. So I didn't return because it was a pointless battle.

So in my eyes a earn points for kills, spend the points at the faction you have earned loyalty with seems like a much more rewarding system.

As well this lets the dev better control the inflow of items as pure luck and like 100 people on one side could net a ton of new items in a day.

i agree with this 100%
i have no issues with the battle aspect - that is nicely done
its the way the rewards are given out that i dislike

the reward system favors the more popular shards
you dont even have to do anything on the popular shards
just log on check if they are near the end flag and if not log off
if they are at or near the end flag all you have to do is kill one monster then hide and walk away from your keyboard
come back in five minutes or so and go click the chest
you get rewarded for doing absolutely nothing
its wrong

so i agree with you they should give you points for actively being involved in killing and advancing the spawn
then you should be able to spend those points to get whichever reward you fancy

they need to make it fair so it doesnt matter if your on a large shard or a small shard

sounds like a nightmare on siege
if its any comfort you probably would of just got a worthless piece of jewelry anyway :(

they need to reward people for soloing the spawn too
maybe give 20 points if you solo the monster and if someone helps you each get 10 and if three people hit it you each get 7 and if four people help you each get 5 etc
would be better if they could reward you points based on how much damage you do but i dont know if thats possible
this might also make people split up
if 10 people are fighting ophidians the points would be so small youd be better off killing some bane
i dont know just an idea

It would be nice if healing other players in the fight earned you loyalty or something, but as it is I'm just enjoying neutrality and being able to help.

In all fairness the reward system they have in place for our item based game sucks.

Doesn't make it any less fun to pick on item based gamers though does it? ;)

I remember reading one of the dev's saying something in regards to this 'campaign' was designed for the person who doesn't play often, as well as for the person who plays often. meaning the rewards percentages were reasonably high. i've received two cloaks and one bracer from ... 20-30 pushes. seems reasonable to me plus I need all those other battles to gather the crystaline blackrock. hang in there Mr Alien.

This is why Treasures of Tokuno is my favorite event. You got minors at a decent pace where you could track your progress. And then you got to turn in the minors you don't want for a major reward that you actually want. I personally can't wait for the next ToT (or use of the same system) except with all new items. I wish this is how they setup the SA drops. All of the spawn should get you points for minors and then you turn them in for the SA major arties (i.e. Tangle, Slither, etc). I would be ok with it taking 100 minors just to have the ability to chose the arty that best fits my needs.

that explains why i feel sick to my stomache after running the war from start to finish

it doesnt make sense that a person who puts in 30 minutes of time and kills 300 monsters gets rewarded exactly the same as a person that puts in 2 minutes of time and kills 1 monster

if they each did the war 10 times player A would have killed almost 3000 monsters and put in 5 hours
player B would have only killed 10 monsters and put in 20 minutes
and it is very likey that player B would get the bracers and player A would not
that doesnt seem right to me

this has been a problem with UO ever since i can remember
healing other players and resurrecting them never gives you any type of reward
in fact it does the opposite it makes you lose damage output and lowers your chance of getting loot
why are all the nice friendly players shafted and the greedy selfish players rewarded?
the devs need to do something about this
perhaphs people who enjoy healing and resurrecting players could go get a special gem or pendant that fills up everytime they heal a player who is actively participating in the war
fill it up all the way and then go turn it in for either points or items
thats just an idea im sure there are many other ways the devs could reward healers

did you miss this part?
i dont mind doing the war over and over again but i just wish i could choose what i wanted and work towards that goal instead of getting bummed every time i get a stupid bag
i dont mind fighting in the war
id fight in it every time it was up if there was a point
as it is right now there isnt a point in actually fighting
you just hide by the flag and log on every 40 minutes or so
or cycle through all the shards checking the flags
leeching off of other players hard work
the design is stupid

it would be alot more fun fighting if you knew at the end of all your hard work youd actually get rewarded for your effort

oh thats a great idea lets make it so one person only has to do the war 5 times and then they can get on with their life while another person has to do the war 20 times and gets so frusterated at not getting rewarded they cancel their account and get on with their life

random is stupid

if it was set at a certain point value then they would both invest the same amount of time and run it the same amount of times and both be rewarded equally
the player who got frusterated after not getting anything after 20 times would stay motivated and positive cause they could see themselves inching closer towards their goal
then if they wanted another pair they would know exactly how long it should take and determine for themselves if they want to invest that much time
if it was medals and the medals could be traded you could have one of your hardcore friends farm some medals for you and then give them to you
new players could sell the medals to lazy people to earn some gold and buy themselves some better equipment
if the devs dont want the hardcore people to farm too many items they could make it so you can only get one of each type of reward per character or something
that would make it so only 7 of the item could be created per account
as it stands right now if someone was really motivated they could probably get dozens of the new items
though i dont know why the devs would even care how many items there were
sorry im rambling now

yeah i like the ToT system too
you can see which rewards there are and you know exactly what you have to do to get them
your efforts dont feel wasted because you know as soon as you get 10 minors you will get one of the greaters you want
the thought of clicking a chest and hoping the random number generator is on your side today is a very dumb way of giving out items in my opinion

You can gather reward codes together to get better rewards or just hoard them for new things that are added.

The base level would be basic items and materials, with each tier becoming more and more "artifact" and rare oriented.

You would still get a random item, but it would be guaranteed to be part of the tier and not something lesser.


For the OP - the randomness is fine, as long as the items you receive are easily traded with others for something you really want. I think the actual issue here is that the reward "set" is far too diverse and needed to be restricted to items that justify your effort (if you don't get a new artie, perhaps you get a check for 50K instead, for instance -- or at least something in a similar tier of usefulness.)

Agree Random rewards suck. No one asked for GIVE me.. In fact we asked to pick and EARNED reward. I don't get why ppl keep saying this. When we ask to build to a reward they scream we want something HANDED over . WTH are you smoking?

because the game isnt fun when everything is just handed to you

gimme gimme gimme is what the stealthers around the flag pole are saying
they could care less about fighting or helping other players advance the spawn
they just log on for a minute or two for their chance to pull from the chest

i prefer everything to be kept in the game

i think i understand what your saying about the tiers
that sounds like a good idea
the first tier could be special named and hued ophidians weapons or bane armor
this would be good for people who like to collect sets of things
but if you dont care to try and collect a set of weapons or armor you could turn 5 of them in for a chance at something else like a special blackrock shovel or pickaxe that increases your chance to dig up blackrock
this would be good for people who enjoy gathering resources
but if mining isnt of interest to you then turn 5 shovels and pickaxes in for a chance at one of the cloaks (this would require completing the war 25 times so it wouldnt really flood the market)
they could even add a new cloak to get by doing this to make it worth trying for
then if you dont want the cloaks turn 5 of them in for a chance at the bracers or the ring or a bane dragon egg
though the randomness might still get a bit frusterating

i guess they could add NPCs that would offer you a quest to turn one item into another item
like you randomly pull a second pair of bracers but what you really wanted was the egg
so do a quest that involes the story and then the NPC will take the item you dont want and give you the item you do want

good idea though its alot better then what we currently have and has alot of potential
doesnt even have to be implemented the way i explained i know my way is flawed i was just having fun playing with the idea
heck they could even give us garbage like kindling and bandages and rations which we could save up untill they turn on part 2
the random weapon armor or jewelry to me is just a slap in the face
i could probably find something better killing a random stone gargoyle that gets in my way during the war

yeah i dont understand why people think i want the reward handed to me
what i am asking for would actually require us to put in more effort instead of just hiding by a flag pole waiting for others to defeat the spawn for you
i am actually asking to make getting the rewards harder
yes we'd get exactly what we want but we are prepared to work for it

i have explained my thoughts and ideas enough
im just starting to repeat myself
if people dont understand what i am saying and asking for by now then oh well
the devs will continue to be lazy and you can continue to be lazy too
or if you actually fight and advance the spawn then you can continue to get ripped off and cheated
doesnt matter if you work your butt off or kill one monster the result is the same

The OP idea is, indeed, precisely what is done at end-game right now with Emblems of Triumph and Emblems of Frost. Edit: For World of Warcraft, that its!

The former are received, generally, for the first random normal-difficulty dungeon of the day, as well as for every post-first heroic-difficult random dungeon and each heroic dungeon boss. Frost emblems are for the first random heroic dungeon of the day. You can get them from raids as well, but the former is how one is usually going to accumulate them.

Barring raid drops (generally speaking,) Frost gear is the best gear, followed by Triumph gear. Armor bought with Frost gear is either 60 for the shoulder or glove pieces, and 95 or so for the helmet, chest, or leg pieces - Meaning your butt is going to be grinding for a long, long time if you don't raid.

UO is already a paraplegic, leprous WoW, might as well steal something else from them.

I certainly don't think we have to steal the medal idea to curtail the random rewards of course.
