Its a Friday at long last and the last day of my short work week. Today I will touch on a subject that many players have a strong opinion on.

Do you or have you ever Role Played with your character in UO? Are you a casual RPer or a serious one who tries never to slip out of character? Have you ever attended a RP sponsored event (EX: PGoH Bards Night) in game to take part in or just watch? Has the RPing part of the game interested you, but you have no idea how to get involved, or do you feel the serious RPers block themselves off from everyone else in game?

I know I am what many call a casual RPer. When I do interact with serious RPers I try my best to stay in character. Many of you don't know this but 10 years ago when I was the GM of the BtD the guild was a RPing guild. Some of my fondest memories in game are from those days long ago.

Well, I like to play the pirate since 9 years. I'd call myself a role player, but I do not exaggerate roleplaying to a point where it limits my in-game freedom. (Of course, some people like to roleplay in an extreme way, and it always is entertaining to have those around yourself!)

I only slip out of character when I'm discussing things in private. Staying in character all the time has one big advantage: You can do A LOT of things and people just know that they don't have to take it personally. That enhances the gaming experience a lot! I like it when I can leave the real world for a while and do things I'd obviously not do when I'd only play the person I really am.

I think there are cases where roleplaying is done to an extent where the "normal" player will fail to understand the motivation behind it. This may cause the impression of roleplayers "blocking themselves off". However, I think that it isn't always the case. True, some guilds have strict roleplaying rules, while others (like ours) allow the player to perform "light" roleplaying. I deliberately try not to block off non-roleplayers. We actually have some of those in our guild. They learn just by watching us roleplayers. They are having fun and we are taking it easy. Most of them are really good and reliable fellows, and I would be a fool to not let them join us. I always say: Look like a pirate and try to behave like one! Everything else will follow automatically.

if taking the role of my toons like a multiple personality extension counts, then yes, i am a serious role player. Otherwise no.

Short answer: Yes, Definitely, most of the time, not really and no.

Longer answer: Role playing really depends on my mood. I have one character who is rarely, if ever out of character. I have another character who is only out of character when in private. I have my GRI character who is in character a lot of the time. Fortunately, his character and his role in GRI mesh pretty well. Then I have my two get away characters who usually hunt alone, which I can't really describe as role playing.

So it depends on if I feel like roleplaying and which level of drama I feel like playing with.

Question 2: I have not only attended those functions, I've run more than my fair share. But that was then. Now I don't have time to run those things. But when I do get time, I plan on opening a tavern or running quests. Or both!

Question 3, part 2: That "Role players block themselves off from the rest of the game" reputation is something that seriously annoys me. And it doesn't annoy me because it is an unfair conclusion, but rather because it's true of a great many role players. Way back when, it was our quest in life (Village of Virtue, Napa) to rid as many people of the exclusion reputation as we could.

That's what I like about the pirates (both UP and BrBc). The pirates out there have fun interacting with almost anyone. They draw people into their fun and make sure their opponents are also enjoying themselves. The plots they lay haven't had foregone conclusions at any point and nobody knows where the day may end. That's the kind of role play I enjoy, and if I had the extra character slot, I'd offer to join myself.

But I don't. So I'll just have to see if they'll be willing to run next to a satyr. Baa!
