Question about Ultima Lore

Im trying to work on something RP related when I realized I did not know the answer to this:

Do the people of each shard know of other shards existence? Are we supposed to know of the existence of the Gem of Immortality and the events surrounding its shattering?

TL;DR: Would commoners know of different realities/shards?

Lord British explicitly made reference to knowing about the other shards and talking to the other Lord Britishes. And there's been enough people over the years who have role-played cross-sharding.

You are safe assuming any given character you want to know can reasonably know.

And at the same time it's such a strange and alarming fact of the characters' existences that you're also on reasonable ground having a character not believe it, or choose to ignore it.

Some of my characters are old enough to know of the shattering because they "were there" for it.

And they exist in some form or another on every shard.

Those old enough to have been around during the Breaking would feel themselves divided and without whole the moment the Gem was Shattered. Though characters would not know the nature or the reason for this deep feeling for a couple decades.

I tend to assume the Britannians - those most associated with British and the Virtues - are aware of the Shattering. There is room for disbelief amongst Commoners and people from other realms such as Zento or the Lost Lands.

A while back, every character got a copy of a book, "The Shattering", dropped in their bankbox - so leaving aside the strange way it appeared, it's possibly one of the best known works in the world ...

A lifetime I have spent studying the mystic arts, and yet it is only lately that I have begun to uncover even the least of the Gem's secrets.

Two things have become clear to me. While both warrant further investigation I know not how much I alone will find, but I keep this notebook as a way to record my discoveries. I hope it will be saved up against the day that I must depart this world, to be of use to those who must succeed me. First, I have uncovered proof that no hand but that of a stranger who defeated Mondain, could have shattered the Gem. A stranger not only to our people, but to our entire reality, the laws and harmonies binding the Stranger were somehow different than those that act upon us. It was this differing set of qualities that allowed the Stranger to interact with the Gem on a plane closer to its own abstract reality, ultimately shattering it.

That those of differing planes can have influence and effect upon our world brings to mind a most disturbing line of thought, best left for another day... yet I feel I must note it now. There was a once madman who attempted to cast a most terrible spell, one which would bring about the cessation of all life upon our world. That he and his followers failed, thankfully, even though they had the requisite knowledge and resources... it seems as though the spell itself was designed by those not of our world.

I leave this, then, and will concentrate upon my second realization. Within each shard of the Gem of Immortality lies a perfect likeliness of the world as it was at the very moment the Gem was shattered. My liege has confessed many things to me, many disturbing things, about the influence the Gem's power still holds upon these worlds.

It is possible that within each of these shards lie copies of the shattered remains of the Gem of Immortality. I had thought this impossible, that the Gem transcended our reality and was no longer a part of our world. Yet I gaze upon the shining facets of a shard, looking at the world slowly spinning within, and it seems clear to me. The stone's sinister power was not destroyed when the Stranger shattered the stone, but instead spread throughout the shards themselves.

Thus the question begs: does this recursion go on forever? Are there worlds within worlds, scattered like dandelions on the wind, lying in my trembling hand?

And what influence does the Gem yet have upon them? "

As for 'commoners' though - they likely know, and care about, such things to the same level most of us in the real world 'know' about nuclear physics, advanced astronomy, or most other sciences ... a vague 'we sort of know a bit about them but nothing at all in any real detail'.

In addition, don't forget Sherry the Mouse's overheard conversation between Blackthorn and British, the fact that she wrote a book about it, and that this book was widely disseminated.

I would say the original poster is on safe ground having a character who knows about these events, and a character who chooses to ignore them or to refuse to believe them.

And then of course there are those people who simply RP under a different mythology altogether. But if he were one of those he wouldn't have asked the question to start with, probably.

There was an event that culminated in finding the book in an enemy stronghold, and some of us copied the book with inscription - only for the book copies to pop up in everyone's bank a week later.

If that is true then it is safe to assume that most - if not all Britannians - are aware of their former monarchs quest to reunite the Shards.

If that is true then would it not be safe to assume that all Britannians are aware of the consequences? Blackthornes Objections. Thousands born since the Shattering wiped from the face of Sosaria?

All to realize one mans perfect dream.

How would that impact the perception of Lord British? Would that not turn most against Britannia?

Individual reactions would vary.

When NPCs used to talk a lot, almost universally they adored Lord British and considered him a wise and good ruler. The NPCs at least either didn't mind the thought of getting blinked out of existence, or didn't think it would ever happen, or didn't believe the stories, or just didn't trust Blackthorn (having read his books, perhaps, and realized he was kind of a jerk).

I should imagine that their perceptions of anything Blackthorn said changed a lot after he became what he became.

And finally there's the fact that British openly abandoned his plan to unite the shards. (And thus, in death, Blackthorn won anyway.) Even someone who objected to British's goals would also likely know that they were changed some time ago.

Also, the fact that citizens of the shards have knowlege of the different facets would also imply that the existence of the shards would almost have to be common knowledge, at least on some level.

Also, for a fun RP perspective, not all characters alive in during the shattering have duplicates on every shard or if they do they can be wildly different. Some may have died (for whatever reason you like) and some will have taken very different paths in life.

The question that intrigues me (it may have been answered before and i missed it) is: Is there a way to communicate between shards? I know some characters have "transferred" (=)) between shards, but was this due to a phenomenom beyond understanding or something controllable ... and if true was there a way to communicate back across the line?
