Question About OSI Servers

Greetings fellow UOers :D

I've only gotten back to UO recently after 5-6 years away from it - to find myself feeling nostalgic upon encountering familiar sights in West Britain and the cities poignant musical theme.

Unlike many in today's surviving UO community, I never got to play in OSI back in my day. You're wondering why, most definitely, and here's the reason(s). Firstly, I'm not exactly as 'old' (for lack of a better word) as the larger portion of the community is - when UO came out I was merely 7 years old, and it wasn't until my early teenage years that I actually got a computer and started gaming. UO was one of the first online games I was introduced to, via some friends in school. I first started playing in some random freeshard the old crew used to be in, and didn't really have a clue whether there was in fact an official server or not - and when I did discover, these so-called friends, also completely clueless themselves, professed the original servers to have been... 'bad'. The idea of a monthly fee most definitely also contributed to our thinking this at the time.

I tried a good number of free shards, playing here and there during my UO gaming experience(many of the shards closed down for a number of reasons) but was never quite able to find anywhere worthwhile and feel truly at home, you know?

Feeling like this, it was inevitable that, between playing a number of other games and travelling around for my studies, I was to take quite a long break from UO. I even believed at one stage that UO was dead and buried, that people just didn't care for it anymore.

I recently started playing on another freeshard again for old times sakes, and I came to realise once more why I once loved this game so much. Having played a wide variety of games to the present game, when it comes to a pure MMO experience there hasn't been a single game that has been able to deliver what UO has in quite the same level. It's sad that the younger player generation today will most likely pick a game that is flashy and beautiful over UO, even though they are completely lacking in a number of aspects which I find needless to list here.

Well, the purpose behind this post is very simple. What I want to know is this: how alive the UO community still is in the OSI servers? I know this is an extremely late start for someone like me, but would it be worthwhile for me to give it a try and see what happens? I know a large number of oldschool players complain about the way the game itself has changed over the passing years, especially after AoS came out. It'd be a pleasure to hear what other active players from the OSI servers would have to say in this regard.

I'm really curious to hear more about this, I really am, so all I'm asking here is if you could spare a few minutes of your time to type a quick reply, I'd be very much debt.

Thank you very much in advance!

There is a large number of us that still play UO, after all these years. There are also many new players experiencing UO on a production shard for the first time. Go get yourself a free 15 day account and give it a try.. Atlantic and Great Lakes have the larger populations, if that's what you're looking for, but other shards have their god points as well. It will depend on your play style, where you choose to play.

Go download the client, and experience the game you love, but on a real server.

It is very alive. We have a revitalized Event Moderator program on deck and an enthusiastic, passionate, and engaged Development Team at the helm. UO is at full sail (sometimes just three sheets though :p). Come make new friends and death robes. :pirate::arr:

It is never too late to have fun. AOS definitely pushed the game in a different direction. Most of them say it became too complex, but it is no more or less complex than other modern MMOs. That shipped sailed long ago, and there is no going back, so I will not dwell on it any longer. This game a vast number of activities to suit any playstyle (more than it used to). There are new lands, dungeons, monsters, treasure, and people to keep you busy for along time.

As Lord Lew said, just download it and experience the real game. You definitely get what you pay for.

Stayin Alive,
