Question About Haven

Hello. I just started my 14 day trial today and was sent to this place called haven. For the most part I have had an enjoyable time so far. I saw something going on today that made me curious.

As I'm hunting undead in the old haven I notice this player riding around on some big bird and it causing all the specters to attack her. She then rides off very slowly to and eventuallyl leads them all to a house where she shuts the door leaving them all outside.

Thinking she was hiding from them I start to kill them, they are about the hardest thing I can kill at the moment and drop good loot for me. As soon as I start to attack one she runs out the door asking me to please not kill them. I asked her why and she says "Shes using them". I try and get more information but I was ignored.

Needless to say I was very confused. I tried to look up some information on the web and from what I'm understanding only younge players are allowed into haven unless your some sort of newbie helper or something. If this is the case why was this person trying to hide the good monsters from the newbies instead of trying to help us?

Am I wrong about how Haven works?

1. Anyone is allowed in haven.

2. The person was "using" the spectral spellbinders to train resist.

3.HOWEVER, she has ZERO right to ask you not to kill them. No one OWNS monsters. If she doesn't like it, tough. That area was meant for young characters to train, not experienced characters to use questionable tactics to train a skill that normally takes days or weeks of normal gameplay in hours.

4. In fact, if she bugs you too much, go into the help section and page on her for harassment - and note that she is using terrain to obstruct monsters for her gain in your page - this is a tactic that is considered suspect, though it isn't always actionable (it really depends on the game master and the type of obstruction).

Thank you for the reply. I left for a little while in hopes she would move on but when I came back later she had 2 friends helping her now. There were several people and pets in the house with the spellbinders casting on them. I watched them for a little bit. They just stood there talking. Never killed a one. Went back and looked around for spellbinders everywhere. I guess the took them all. If they keep it up I might report them and see if I can get any help. Its pretty lame to horde monsters from newbies.

Which server do you play? I would be more than happy to pull the spellbinders back into the city for you so you can train. P.S. I think pulling the spellbinders to the ruined house SE of Old haven proper is a really lame way to train resists

I just hope you don't get too frustrated with this phatcat.
It's a shame that new players are treated this way in a game that dearly needs them.
While I personally don't see a problem with this training method myself, I also say, that Haven is a new player area and you have every right to kill those if you like. At the least, she should have explained the situation to you and leave some of the spectres for you to kill. I guess that would be a fair solution for you?
Don't worry, not all the veteran players are so selfish. Many will gladly help you without being asked when they see your "new player" tag above your head

At least here on Drachenfels that's the case.
I was given 3x 115 and 3x 110 powerscrolls, items and a million gold check in the first week after I returned

Others have replied to your actual questions.

Welcome to UO!

You will find the issue of who "owns" spawn comes up again and again and again.

The official answer is that no one owns the spawn.

Sometimes this works against you, as players can harass you by killing only the monsters that you're fighting, ignoring other monsters, and this is completely legal.

However, sometimes this works for you, as in this case. Someone is using the spawn designed to help noobs train up to work the Magic Resistance/Resisting Spells skill.

But luckily you are free to kill them anyway. She may yell and scream and try to intimidate you away though.

Players like this are a minority in UO but they have an impact WAY outside their numbers.

The advantage to non-noobs being allowed in Haven (oh, and btw, now it's called "New Haven," "Old Haven" was destroyed in an explosion) is that sometimes they drop respectable equipment by the bank. Be sure to keep checking. Some shards are better than others. Lake Superior (LS, my home shard) is particularly good about that.

I play on Lake Superior. For the most part I have found people to be helpful. I have had 2 people ask me if I needed any help. Lots of people droping stuff outside the bank. Ive been trying to do the same with any magic items that drop for me.

I guess there are inconsiderate players in every game. Just have to get use to it. I never did report them. I seemed to be the only younge player in the area so I just moved on instead of making waves.

As far as Haven and New Haven I wasn't to sure whats going on. It seems alot of the info on the www.uo.com webpage is out of date. It was saying that only Champions and younge people can enter Haven.

Still pretty lost but I'm getting there. I really like the old UO games. I've owned and played them all which was what really drew me to this game. I know its an older game but so far it seems to offer things that a lot of the other MMORPGs out there don't offer. Can't wait till I can actually own a house. I've looked at some of the picture threads here and all I can say is wow.

Anywho. Sorry to ramble on. Thanks for the replys and the help. Good to know there are some nice players out there.
