Question about Chat problems

I had to reinstall UO when I had a hard disk crash this week.
Now every time I log in I have to re-pick general chat to get it to work.
When I go to chat it shows I am in general chat but when I go to use it tells me I need to join.
Ant one ever had this problem and know a fix?

classic or enhanced? i've heard of this problem in enhanced client before, though i don't know a solution. maybe you could fool it with a setting edit.

I erased all the character files and redid them - same problem.
I am going to try a total new install next

Sometimes with Windows 10 and security settings it won't create the files that save those settings. If you are using Windows 10 that could possible be it.

Is it only chat or are your spells and skills that you dragged out also affected?

Windows 7 home prem - and it seems to only be chat - but now you gave me an idea on file properties.

Something similar had the power go out while playing and the acct always logs in help chat. I change to general chat and it talks in help chat and only does it on Siege. If whatever you do to your files works let me know as well, because everything I have tried has been a bust.

I don't know what I did but I think I fixed it. I changed all file ownership - changed all exe files to run by administrator for all users - changed all the user files to eliminate read only (which is still marked after the change). I'll try on my other accounts and let you know if it is fixed.
