Question about champ spawns

What actually determines whether or not an item drops in my pack? Is it the amount of damage i do to the mobs before the champ? Is it how many mobs I kill? Is it how much damage I do to the champ itself? What? Because i have done several in the last few days and sometimes ill get 2 items during the spawn and sometimes I won't get anything at all. The only times I have gotten something have both been during killing the spawn before the champ was ever out.

Also, does the champ drop something specifically that I should be going up to him/her and looting them to try to get, or does something drop in your pack if you do the most damage to a champ? I have read multiple discussions / walkthroughs on champ spawns but still dont seem to understand what im supposed to actually be doing to receive items from the event. Any help will be appreciated greatly.

The item/replica will drop in your pack, but some of best loot is found on champ bosses so should open up and look.

Currently the whole champs are so bugged and random I wouldnt bother learning how you get a chance. I recommend reading the pub 58 champ bug fixes that is a sticked thread. It has a nice description. I think people miss it because it is stickied. Stickie is death to thread!
