I'd be inclined to think someone's spreading some ole hooey about pre-patch pets not requiring the same amount of taming/lore as post-patch pets.

actually, it's probably someone who truly thinks they have something special (but doesn't).
My GM was telling me about how he had a prepatch dragon from LONG ago. I was like "ok, lemme see it". The stats all fell in the same ranges as our current dragons. His had actually rolled somewhat uninspiring stats.
I hated to burst his bubble, but he really had a slightly sub-par pet.
Don't pay extra for a pre-patch dragon... look at the stats and if they are decent, consider buying it. If not, find one that has good stats

I had a "pre-pre-patch dragon" from 8 years ago now. Only it really was worthless, because in one of the pet publishes, all the old pets ended up with 0 physical resist. So while I can claim my dragon was really really old, it was also really really useless except as a "rare" in a collection...

I have some ancient pets. They have average resists and don't do any extra damage. I have a friend who has a very ancient white wyrm. It's only neat thing is that it sounds like a dragon and not a wyrm (listen to how a dragon obeys commands and wyrms obeys). Damage is the same. Resists and stats on it aren't anything to write home about.
My old meat eating ki-rin and unicorn are average, too. My old mare is average at best, other than it had good str and max hits when it was changed over.
I'd really like us to get some screenshots of the lore gump for our ancient pets. I haven't seen any that had over max resists or hits even though people talk about how they have pets that do.

Like you, I have two old mares and one meat-eating unicorn. I traded my fire-damage frost spider to a regular poster here and I really, really hope he'll post the lore pages of that lil critter just because it's fun!
My carnivorous unicorn has within range stats and shows ---- for physical resist. Because she was gifted to me, I don't have much specific info on her.
My pre-patch shortmane mare converted normally to 515/315 which was, I believe, the default max setting for pre-patch nightmares. Call shows resists well within the mare resist range.
My longmane blue mare converted with 524/315 with the normal within-range spread of stats & resists.
The only difference between the two mares is that the account with the shortmane was open at the time of the conversion while the account with the longmane blue was closed and reopened some years/publishes/patches later.
I do have another pre-patch longmane blue (always preferred those to the pure black mares...) on a closed account which I checked during the last, recent Return to Britannia week and which converted normally to 515/315 & within-range resists.
Screenies to follow at my earliest opportunity.

I have a 0 resist bright pink hell hound leader on LS. Sad. I used to love her so, and now shes useless.
