By law, Telstra have to provide a FREE directory assistance number , because they are still majority owned by the government. They choose however not to pass this number on to the public.

What's the free number? 1223

[/ QUOTE ]The message you posted is over three years old, and whether or not it was true or not in 2004 when this email started circulating, it certainly isn't now.

The Sensis 1234 costs $1.40 + a connection fee of $0.88 IF they put you through to a number, which seems to be up to you. Standard rates apply to the connected call, and of course calling from a mobile will be more. Still not cheap, but nor is it simply a directory assistance number. Sensis CAN help you find a phone number and put you through if you wish, but they also provide sports scores, movie session times, the weather report and even answer general trivia questions. It's also intended as an aided search, whereby you call and say "can you help me find a mechanic that does Saabs in XYZ suburb?" for example.

If you go to Telstra's website and look up directory assistance, it tells you the number is 1223. After that, it mentions Sensis as an alternative (and explains it is a personally assisted search). The Sensis homepage also tells you to call 1223 first and foremost, unless you don't know the name of the company you are looking for.

They have no plans to phase out 12456 which is "Call Connect". That's if you want them to find a specific number and transfer you directly.

Ah cools. Was just trying to help :p

[/ QUOTE ]Definitely, Jah, and I'd say there was some truth to it initially. I just imagined that poor Ben Hardwick guy copping a bunch of phonecalls about this, so I looked it up before I spread the word any further.
