Possibly Returning after 5 Years Off

So I haven't played UO in about four to five years (from what I remember) but I'm wondering what the life is like on GL.

How has the real estate been on GL? When I left it was getting to the point where you could place a 8x8 pretty much anywhere in any facet and if you were lucky you could find an open tower spot in the woods of Fel due to the amount of people leaving.

Are places like the Brit Bank dead? What about the Fel gates? I had a red back in the days of [u1t], [M*A], [PwNt], etc. and the Fel gates were usually a good bet for PvP.. especially Yew.

Just wondering if I should return or if I should just scratch off my UO itch?

Thanks!

Welcome back. (You haven't come back yet but I'll welcome you back anyway.)

GL is usually the 2nd most populated shard (behind Atlantic).

PvP is spotty. When it's active it's in the same places as always (Yew Moongate, Britain and other Faction areas, Despise/Fire/Terathan Keep).

Real Estate.....You could probably find an 18x18, but it'll take some looking. No idea on the tower.

Brit Bank is still dead but not as dead as it once was due to the presence of a Spellweaving circle there, and because most Event Moderator events start from someplace in that city. Mostly, though, WBB has been replaced by the Luna Bank and the Global Chat system.

Thanks. I'm debating whether I should join GL or ATL. I remember GL was dying out when I stopped playing, and this was years ago.

I'm glad to hear EM events still go on though, when I left there hadn't been an EM event in months and EA didn't seem too motivated to continue them.

How is the global chat system? I've never heard of it and that was always one of those user requests that went ignored a million times on the UHall.

I'm also seeing things sell for "billions" of gold..?! Has the economy really been ruined that much? How far does 100M go these days?

Anybody play both GL and ATL who could offer insight as to where to go? Thanks!

Global Chat varies between useful talk, fun talk, and smack talking about PvP that may or may not have actually occurred.

The stuff that goes for billions is rare or one of a kind items that are rarely, if ever, of any use and are deco only, mostly server birth stuff or from EM events.

The highest price I've heard of for something useful is from a very recent game-wide event, and there were only 2 on GL and like 3 on Atl, less on most shards, and that price was 500m.

So I wouldn't worry about it.

If anything the price of useful equipment is headed downwards, and may have bottomed out recently, due to the presence of a new crafting skill called Imbuing (which lets you fix certain mods on an item subject to strict limits and your item cannot be Fortified), and a new crafting technique called Runic Reforging (which lets you fix certain mods on an item, MUCH less limited than Imbuing, but also much more costly and you have much less control over what you get), and as I recall the number of runic tools you can get for traditional crafting has also been boosted.

There's also new loot from Shame, Covetous, and Wrong that can be quite awesome, with the price that most of the best stuff you find is either cursed, irrepairable, un-fortifiable, or some combination of the 3.

And as far as I can tell GL's always been more of a "do it for yourself" shard than it is a commerce-oriented shard. There's some commerce but mostly it seems like here we want you to do it for yourself if you at all possibly can. Very self-reliant. (I am not a native, I'm an import from LS and, to a lesser degree, Europa.)

It's a wide open field these days, don't be fooled by high prices.

Ask around in Global Chat about where to look for stuff, learn who to not listen to and who to listen to, and you'll do fine.

We are most definitely not a dead shard. And Thank The Dear Lord God that we are not as big as Atlantic.

Oh, on the EMs. Our two are, as far as I can tell, the best by a considerable margin. No offense to other shards or their EMs, I'm not saying your EMs suck, just saying ours are, comparatively, rather better.

I just returned a few months ago after five or so years myself. WBB is used for spammers in chat for skilled circles for Spellweaving (I think.) You can find a pretty sweet house just about anywhere. I don't know about the new lands though, but here's some stuff I've gathered.

- They haven't even finished the virtue system yet.
- Quests are lame.
- You can still kind of hunt yourself, but I've found it's a group effort for a lot of the newer stuff.
- I bought both upgrades, and still think it was a waste of money.
- Any and all time working to make any kind of suit was a waste of time, thanks to Imbuing.
- Still no cowboys and indians, but there are gargoyles.
- Like, nobody posts on stratics.
- SearchUO and UOGuide have been superly majorly helpful.
- UO sucks if UOAssist doesn't work.
- You can't patch from T2A anymore.. (If anyone knows how, I'll be your bff.)
- I play another shard on the side (other than Atlantic) to keep things interesting.
- Apparently they did something to boats. I've still yet to find out. (or haven't had the interest to yet)

High Seas Expansion changed boats and fishing
Yes Billion gold piece items are typically very rare OR sometimes Luna property in the heart of the city
100m will entertain you for a bit, but one can easily spend more than that on some armor items unless you like hunter gather and have a legendary imbuer.
There are still avenues to expand your horizons a bit, vet rewards brought out transfer shields though you need 2 to get anywhere and back and its only 1x per month.
Rustic and Gothic packs are mostly deco other than the raised garden bed which is most useful if you wish to be self sufficient and grow your own. Ha!
Stygian Abyss brought out the most changes and Ter Mur and the gargoyle thing aren't available without that upgrade nor the new fishing/boating changes without that expansion.
EM events can be both entertaining and annoying often at the same time.
The Economy is much like history stories of post WW2 where it took wheelbarrows of money to buy anything.
Many new skills since then and ingredients, gold seems plentiful enough to gather with a bit of effort or honed merchant skills.

Just thought I would throw my 2 cents in :)

I returned fairly recently after a long break.... The economy, while different is pretty good, yeah there are the super rare items that sell for loads but all in all with all the craft skills and some inventive template work you can either craft or gather ANYTHING you could need, you can do this solo but my recommendation would be make some friends and get hunting (its one of the M's in MMORPG hehe) when i came back I have 20k in my bank... thats right 20k.... I dusted off my warrior and made a sampire.... I gather imbue ingreds and at first was selling them as i needed a suit.... let me tell ya! OK so heres how it goes.. you can be very effective with minimal gear. my first sampire suit cost me 500k (which i made killing troglodytes) it was a heart of the lion, fey legs and then some runic crafted pieces and a bracelet of health and a ring of the vile... i could tackle high end monsters no problem and to be honest, i had just as much fun as i do now running in my Uber gear.

I don't know your play style but a good crafter is a good friend to have. I personally have all the craft skills maxed out now and to be honest there is NO WAY i would have been able to buy the suits I have on my characters if i didnt. Crafting armour can be as simple or as complicated as you make it. for my sampire for example, it took me nearly 3 weeks just to craft the base pieces before I even stated adding mods. with reforging and imbuing / enhancing you can make armour that is hands down better than most artifacts... there are some arties though that are simply too good not to have. the good news is though that they can all either be farmed or obtained from donations (like brit library).

I am totally going off on one here so I will bring it back on track... I love GL for a few reasons... the people... yeah every shard has good and not so good folk but GL seems to have more good :) its active, there are always hunts going down, good auctions and stuff and you always get help if needed.

Come back, and try it out... if you dont like it you can always move to another shard.

The game has undergone some pretty cool changes of late, the dungeon revamps are good fun and the peerless hunts and people like medusa, styg dragon and corgul (to name a few) are good fun too.
