Political Ads on Stratics??

I just saw a political ad regarding labor unions, the U.S. Congress, and President Obama at the bottom of the page while viewing a U.Hall thread. I'm a bit shocked. I understand the bazillion game ads we see and even the ad I saw earlier this evening for some kind of sleep aid, but now ads influenced by U.S. politics?? This is a forum for English-speaking players from many countries who are interested in online games. It just doesn't seem like a good place to drum up support for a political cause isolated to one specific country.

Its an ad. I think game oriented ads are much worse than political ones, at least you can't "give up UO and play Obama" or whatnot, but you can give up UO in favor of some free to play game.

I can't remember the last time I've seen an ad ;)

That being said, I certainly hope it was ANTI-union.

Advertisers know your general location by your IP address. I have seen advertisements on websites for politicians in my city.

and such is the very good reason not to start adding political ads to the site.. I smell a heap-o-trouble coming to U-hall!

Agreed that the ad was inappropriate for the site, I was just curious of content.

Welcome to the New Owners..... TGN

I would suspect you will see more ads like that and anything / anyone else wants to advertise here (within reason). I keep expecting to see a BP advertisement like they have everyday in the USA today.

We as players can not talk politics in these forums, those posts get deleted, or the threads get locked. This is no place for it I have seen one time or another. That also should be with Political Ads this is no place for them. I surely do not want any Politics shoved down my throat I get enough of that from the TV.

We can't debate WoW in UHall either, but that didn't stop the WoW ads, did it?

I don't like having WoW or <insert F2P game here> ads shoved down my throat either, but Stratics is an ad revenue site, so if an ad doesn't interest you, then just ignore it.

Yes that is true but they also have Wow forums here on stratics. Just like we cannot debate WOW here in Uhall most likely they cannot debate UO in the WOW forum, but there is no Politics forums here for us to debate Politics so there should not be Political Ads on Stratics.

UHall OT is open to political debate I believe?

The adverts aren't selected individually, just from a 'trusted source' so there shouldn't be any problems with viruses etc. The 'source' determines what adverts are shown.

To survive Stratics must have an income. To have an income we must have adverts. Currently, I believe, we have the best source of revenue without putting the site at risk.

That would be incorrect, according to the "index"

I don't do Uhall OT, so I wouldn't know if its debated there. I wouldn't have a real problem with the ads, but not being able to debate politics in Uhall doesn't seem fair those ads should be posted here in the Uhall forum. OT UHall would be ok to post them or any OT forums here. Even the main Stratics sight would be ok.

Unfortunately it doesn't quite work like that. The ads are in the actual board template, not selected by which board you're viewing.
You choose which advertising source you will use - in this case google. You put the coding in the board template. What is shown is determined by the ad company, it will appear in the selected areas of the board framework. The individual forums are displayed within that framework.

Since I was allowed to express how I felt about it. I don't like it one bit, but since you nicely pointed out why they are needed, and how the ads work here. I will drop it. :)

As Petra stated, we dont have a choice about what ads are displayed via the source we use, we do however have the option to block specific ads if we feel that are offensive or inappropriate to our network.

Thus far we have not spotted them and therefore suspect they are being displayed only in certain locales, but if anyone comes across one feel free to pass along the source code and we will certainly have a look.

I would rather see political ads than the ones I usually see...

This is about as "political" as I get...

...in other words, I don't take it at all seriously and quite like seeing the mickey taken out of it. :thumbup1:

Too bad some of us are unable to access administrative options on our work computers so we can only use the software we are provided. Nice fail...la
You're right... posting on game internet forums with work computers... big time fail.

er, I have FF and AD+ on both work and home systems. FF @ workplace is only for non-business stuff and typically only Stratics.

Desktops here are set to allow some installation by users - especially IT - because testing of software is done quite often. IMO not a fail but using the tools allotted to me! <shrug>

Im usually in agreement with you Rico , but posting to a web site using someone else's system (employer) for something that is unrelated to work doesn't seem like a good idea. You put other people's data in jeopardy and that could lead to a very very big fail.
