Ok so I start getting a rating on all my old pets in the stables that I had tamed prior to leacing UO. Well basically they all suck according to the calculator. So I take out my WW release it and kill and go tame another one to replace it. I must be missing something. Does everyone ectually use this calculator BEFORE taming ?? I only see 2 options 1. Trained pet 2. freshly tamed.

I am afraid I will get whacked while trying to enter stats into a calculator while in game

I am assuming you all are checking the pets rating after taming ??

Any tips on using this tool the most efficient way without getting myself killed in a dangerous area would be appreciated.

For taming aggressive pets (or for taming in agressive areas) I find the Invisibilty spell to be most useful. Just cast the spell and use your Animal Lore skill to get the pet's information. Animal Lore is one of the few skills that can be used when hidden/invisible. At GM Magery, the spell lasts about two minutes, which should be plenty of time to check the information. Of course the first few times will be a little slower, so you may have to cast it again, but you will get the hang of it. Just be careful to not get revealed (but that would happen soon after you cast it), if you do get revealed, just cast it again.

This will allow you to check untamed pets without much trouble. If you stick around with a fresh tamed pet, the local aggressive monsters can attack it and you will have to deal with them accordingly.

What I do is look up the stats of my chosen pet, then make a note of the stats etc I'm looking for, rather than calculate for each pet I see. Then I don't need to flip between UO and a browser, just refer to my notepad as I go. As soon as a pet appears that looks decent, I'll take a closer look. I might run the pet through the calculator to see if it's as good or bad as I think, but usually I decide on the spot if it's worth stabling or not.

I tend to use either invis or hide/stealth if I'm in a dangerous spawn area, but if I'm working a spawn with a pet I lore the wild critter when it spawns and compare its stats etc while it's fighting my tame pet. If I need more time I tell my pet to stop then follow me, then it'll stop damaging the wild one. If you use a mount pet for working spawn you can also invis yourself and mount your pet to break the fight up too. There is a risk that a casting pet will reveal you with that last option though.

Then there's the option of peacing and so on too, so really I'd say try what you can and see what works best for you

The nice thing about loring a pet is that the pet lore gump stays up until you close it. So once you've lored the pet you can take as much time as you need to figure out whether it is worth spending your precious honour on, if that is what you do, or just taking the effort to tame it.

It's also a good thing with greater dragons to make a note of their skills before you tame them so that you know what you can train them up to (you can train them up to 90% of the untamed number).

The notepad is a good place to start.
The section at the bottom of the calculator which indicates the 90% points is a good reference.

After a while, you'll know all of the pet values you're looking for by heart and won't need the calculator any more (I don't need to calculate cu sidhe, rune beetle, bake kitsune, nightmares, for example)
