Permanent Weakened?

I've been playing the free trial for a few days and enjoying the game.

For the past two days I've had the status effect Weaken on my character. It gives -8% strength, and the only mob I could've gotten it from was a Spectral Spellbinder since I haven't left the island of New Haven yet.

I tried searching UO Guide for the answer and Google, but they only list it as a temporary thing. Is it supposed to stick around this long (have at least 5 hours in the past day that I've played), or is there some way to remove it I've been looking over?

It is actually gone. Its a bug that the debuff stays. The easiest way of getting rid of it is to have your local paladin cast remove curse on you. If it stays after that try eating an enchanted apple. If that doesn't work you will have to page a GM. For the record if it is actually still having the negative effect page a GM. If your on Chesy I would be happy to do these and get you an apple if needed.

Err, nevermind, issues fine now. Someone in game suggested I get Weaken again and let it wear off. Icon went with it the second time.

as noted this is a bug ... the stat-altering spells all will do this at one time or another - and not just to new folks like you.

Yeap. Its a big pain, although it just seems to be the image on your buff debuff bar as it doesn't seem to continue to have an effect.
