I'm trying out a new template.... and after finding this thread: UO Stratics - Parrying I have to ask... is there any reason to even have the parry skill?

It kinda depresses me, because I really like these shields:

But using them is kinda pointless if I'm reading the bushido skill correctly. Unless I'm wrong? Is there a reason to have parry over bushido?

The advantage of Bushido is that you can chug potions without having to disarm a shield. And you have some useful Bushido spells.
The advantage of Parry is that you can use nifty shields for extra bonuses. And you have room for one more skill.

The chance to block is nearly the same with both skills.

I was thinking about making a fighter using only two-handers with no bushido. Will I have a defence or parry penality?

Parry: Blocking with shield
Parry + Bushido: Blocking without a shield (penalty if you use a shield)

With a two-handed weapon and NO Bushido skill you cannot block any attacks. You'd have to rely on weapon skill and Defense Chance Increase only (both reduce the chance to be hit). If you want to use two-handed weapons and want to be able to block, you need Parry AND Bushido, since you cannot use any shields.

That isn't entirely accurate.

If you have high bushido, and you equip a sheild, your chance to parry is reduced to roughly 5%.

If you have just 120 parry, at least 80 dexterity you have the best chance to parry while holding a shield (35%). If you don't want to wear a shield, you can still parry but the chance is reduced down to 20%.

Pft samurais never used shields. Knights and stuff did.

Seriously tho, id like to add about something i was concerned for a time about, the JOT human racial affecting parrying with a shield (when you dont have bushido)
Turns out it does not affect parry chance.

Hmm, very interesting number there. Well, here is my template:

Swordsmanship: 120.0
Tactics: 120.0
Chivalry: 120.0
Healing: 120.0
Anatomy: 120.0
Focus: 120.0

I was considering dropping focus and picking up parrying. With honor, I don't think focus is all that important for a melee fighter.

Honor only gives you the extra damage and stamina/mana bonus on a kill if you have the bushido skill.

But you can do without focus anyway. Having mana/stamina leech on your weapon will help with that.
