parry mage

due to acquiring a nice mage weapon and the massive amount of archers/dexxers on the shard i play, i have dropped wrestling (can't disarm worth a damn) and added parry to my scribe mage. I have a few questions for stats on him. I was told you need 80 dex for parry to work...that seems very hard to do. Is this true or can you run less? And if i need 80 dex, what sort of items boost dex..or str and intl for that matter. Currently i'm 100 str, 50 dex and 110 intel with my suit on. I tried some agility pots but they last like 20 seconds. I also always try to stay blessed. Any tips or ideas would be greatly appeciated. my template is:
120 magery
120 eval
120 med
120 resist
120 parry
100 scribe
5 extra i put into focus cause i wear crystalline ring.

Well for parry to be effective on your template you'll need to carry a shield, not a mage weapon. If you carry a mage weapon your parry is actually waisted, unless you have bushido. You need bushido in order to block an opponents blow using a weapon. You'll also need at least 50 points in a weapon skill to use parry and bushido.

i use a bone harvestor that is sc -20 mage weapon, i make that up with crystalline ring. Then i run the shield of invulnerability for 15 dci. ( no -1 pen on weap)

That could be an effective build in an archer heavy environment. I have a guildmate that ran that template.

Only short coming I see is having both hands full you can't chug pots.

A suggestion to aggravate an archer that attacks you:
Curse, mindblastX2, fireballX3.

Curse will lower his resist, mindblast will lower his stamina and swing speed, fireball will do decent damage and is a quick spell to use.

Watch your health and throw in a heal as needed.

Throw in a poison to interupt his bandies, try a paralize to see if he has resist.

Keep mindblasting him to lower his stamina and give him something else to think about. If he has no resist paralyze, explosion, flamestrike. Repeat until death.

Your shield and dci if you have 45 will help him miss. Lowering his stamina will give him fewer chances to hit you before you kill him!

Don't be afraid to use protection. If he's hitting you so fast he's inturrupting you enough to be a pain it can't hurt. I use it most of the time and fast casters or dexxers really don't bother me too much. You just need to watch your health closely and heal when needed. I use Gheal when I have protection on.

GFY,

Sorry if this was answered above, I can't tell. I've been thinking of making a parry mage myself, dexxers I have trouble with..not so much other mages. I also wanted to add bushido, and use 2 handed mage wep. Now, do you have to have at least 50 REAL weapon skill, or is it fine with the mage weapon?

Thanks

It used to be fine with a mage weapon but the dev team thought this made bush mages too powerful. They changed the code so now you need 50 real points in a weapon skill. (I'm not sure if you could make these points from items)

Another thing to think about as a bush mage is the dex requirement to block. I think you need 80 dex to have the max chance to block.

The only thing I don't like about a mage weapon in pvp is if you get disarmed you lose your defensive weapon skill. Since mages have a lower dex then dexxers to begin with the dexxer will have more chances to disarm you.

If dexxers give you problems maybe you should look at your tactics.

1) Always try to slow a dexxer down. Mindblast should be your favorite spell vs dexxers, because it eats their stamina slowing their swing speed.

2) Against a fast dexxer put protection on if you need to. Keep your spells small and quick and the dexxer won't notice your slower casting.

3) If your fighting a swords or fencing dexxer that wants to stand next to you, make them pay for being too close. Cast MB, harm, and poison. (because harm does more damage to closer opponents and poison is more effective at close range). I also have wrestling on my mage so when a dexxer gets up close and personal I make sure he does it without a weapon!

4) Against an archer you need to watch what he's using for specials. If a ninja cast deathstrike DON'T RUN !! The damage will increase as you run away from him! Give your healing macros a good work out and MB him to drop his swing speed. Follow this up with explosion, poison, flamestrike. Watch his damage and if the poison goes off exp, fs again. If not MB, MB, poison, FS. Keep an eye on your health bar as well so you can keep yourself healed.

Remember vs a dexxer the main thing is to slow his swing spped down so you can better manage the damage he will be trying to deal.

Thanks for the reply GFY,

Thats too bad about needing 50 real skill =/, was really hoping to use that. I'm curious where did you find this info? I checked UO herald patch notes for back in August when bushido got nerfed, but didn't see anything in there about needing 50 real skill in order to be able to block shots properly.

i play a heavy dexxer pvp shard, and i get disarmed non stop, so chugging pots is very effective for me. Disarm my weapon i make it up with pots. when fighting another mage i usually disarm my weapon for pot chugging. ive been playing this guy with 55 dex and it seems to work well. if i am gettin hit a lot i will chug a few agil and str pots to get a boost. i always stay blessed and what not. i have a hard time conserving mana tho, being i have scribe i tend to like big mana combos. My suit is pretty good but the mr is low im working on gettin that worked out. Its funny that i have more hp regen then mana on a mage >.<

so ty for the replies but i think i am pretty effective at 50 dex, i defenitly parry more when i get buffed up, but i dont know how to get huge stat bonus items worked into my suit to get 80 dex.

One mage I run is a tactics parry mage. I'm not rich in game so what I did was first to get 80 natural dex and used the glasses of the trades (believe that is it) It has 20 stat points on it. With that and the stat bonus on my jewls and the crimson. That char is running 109 str, 80 dex, and 100 Int. Since it is a hybred you have to play it as such so you can't go around dumping. Disarm, bleed, vamp dirupt and chew down. Puts dexers and mages off a bit.

I always wanted to find a nice sc, -20 mage weapon and see if this would be any good:

120 Magery
120 Eval
120 Med
120 Resist
120 Tactics
120 Anatomy

Play it as a hybrid and put more points into dex than normal. The anatomy / eval even covers you if you get disarmed.

Well... (IMHO) you wouldn't be too effective because without weapon skill you wouldn't be able to use your weapon special moves.
