Been trying to upgrade my system a bit, originally assembled about 5 years
ago.

Motherboard is an Intel D865PERL running a Celeron 2ghz, 478 socket.
Like I said, 5 years.
According to support, this board will support 3ghz Pentium 4.
RAM is over a gig.
BIOS has been updated. (that was fun).
But when Pentium is plugged in and turned on, nothing. Other than fans,
nothing seems to happen. No screen display, no beeps, nada.

Any Ideas?

Well, you have covered the BIOS part already, that is good.

The power supply is obviously supplying power, since your fans are turning, but it sounds like the processor is not getting the right voltage.

Could be any number of things.

Are you seeing any LEDs light up on the board itself when you switch on the power?

Kind of curious...what wattage is your power supply? The P4 pulls more power than the Celeron, I think - they sure pump out more heat. Maybe the power supply isn't putting out enough for everything you have component wise now, with the new CPU adding its load.

Another thing it might be is the processor pins are not making good contact or there is a recessed or defective/bent pin. With socket 478 processors, it isn't all that hard to bend a pin when you are aligning and seating the chip. Might be worth checking the processor for bent or missing/broken pin. I hope that is not the case.

How old is the system battery for the CMOS?

I had that problem once on a new computer the processor wasn't seated right in the socket

sometimes on older boards there are jumpers for the processor that need to be placed correctly, should be in the manual

After watching the clip closely it dosn't appear the cat is suffering. It does a few rotations hanging onto a string or something and then jumps free, was prob a good ride?

You may have put the ram in the wrong slots. Try moving them to different slots and see if that fixes it(supposing you have 4 RAM slots).

supposing the numbers below are your RAM slots

1 2 3 4

if you have two 1024 mb sticks, check your MB manual and make sure the placement is right. My board has them placed in slots 1 and 3.

RAM is fine, 1.25 gig.
250 watt PS.
MB auto detects CPU.
Pins are fine, tried reseating.

Beginning to think that this board actually does not support CPU purchased.
Originally got CPU compatibility from on-line support, which listed the CPU
I got for it. After calling support and searching intel on-line, (support for
board was discontinued 3 years ago), found user manual in pdf. List of
compatible CPUs are a bit different than what web sight lists.

New CPU ordered.

Ktorr...just a thought. What is the cost of a new main board that supports the P4 you bought? The reason I say that is the capacitors and such on boards do eventually give out. If you can get a board that is compatible with all your existing components, it might be better to just put together a new system. I sunk money in an old comp I had a while back (about 4 years old), only to have the board blow within a year.

Thought about getting another board, but after looking what was available,
and considering the other "legacy" hardware I'm running with, it would have
been easier just to get a completely new system. If you call a COMPLETE
reinstall of all software easy.

Will try the other new CPU ordered, and if that's a no-go, will continue with
what I have and make due.

my first thought was that the cpu was not supported even thou it may say supported it might be a 2nd or 3rd version and not supported.
If you do decide to upgrade most the inards then you are right in that the cost builds as you will need to get new ram/motherboard/cpu
intel had a phenomial upgrade in core 2 duo so I would suggest that.
another option is to look at the Dell refurbished. You can get a great deal there.

Yup! That is where I got my last 3 computers for personal use, and been very happy with them. I have also bought a number for business use for my employers through the Dell Outlet. Depending on their new computer promotions, it isn't always a better deal to get a system on the Outlet site (which includes new computers whose orders were canceled by customers, scratch &amp; dent, refurbished, and off lease...even if the comp was never opened by the customer, they have to repackage &amp; label it refurb. The 1st 3 catergories come with the same warranty as new, although I am not sure about their off lease ones.)

Sometimes you can seriously come out ahead on software with the refurb, too. On one that I purchased for business off the refurb site, it came with a full license for Office 2003 Pro, and it was less than the price of a base system with same hardware "new" (it was a scratch and dent, and if they hadn't put a sticker on the chassis, I would probably not have noticed the tiny abrasion on the bottom of the case that was the "flaw".)

I saw one the other day that had a $400 Adobe software package on it, and it cost less than the base system with similar hardware specs, on the new site.
