I know we have some LA residents that are Japanese - if you know them and have contact info, check in them.
Hawaii is to be hit by the resulting tsunami in less than 3 hours; airports are shut down there and all the coastal hotels are evacuating people to the 5th floor and higher.
THE ENTIRE PACIFIC COAST is under Tsunami Warning - That's Alaska, BC (Canada), WA, OR, CA, Mexico and all of Central & South America coastal down to Chile. The ETA for the tsunami on the Pacific coast is 7 pacific/10 eastern.
This is the largest quake to hit Japan since scientific records have been kept, and the 7th largest quake recorded with instruments ever. There's been at least 19 aftershocks, and most of them were more powerful than the earthquake that hit New Zealand a month or two ago. There was a fore-shock on Wed. that was in the mid-7s. Their cell phone network is down, as is their mass transit system, and 4 million buildings in just Tokyo are out of power. A lot of people there have gotten so used to both of these, that things are pretty rough in Tokyo right now (people can't get home, and it was right after schools let out). Ironically, people with landlines and wired internet are the only ones able to communicate.
If any of you are on the Pacific Coast, and are at elevations under 30 feet, you should evacuate (especially if near river mouths).
