I found this on UOGuide:

Origin

Origin is a North American shard and is named after the original game studio that developed and launched Ultima Online, Origin Systems Incorporated. Origin was launched a day late on December 17, 2004 to roughly coincide with the launch of Ultima Online: Samurai Empire expansion. As such, only accounts upgraded or bought with the expansion were allowed to create characters on the shard for the first month. Origin traditionally receives all publishes and updates before other production shards.

Slightly OT,

But does anyone here recall if we had server birth rares of the old school style, or had they "fixed" them prior to launching LA? I certainly never remember any marble or sandstone tables or benches being auctioned off.

As I recall there weren't any of the classic server birth rares when Origin was born, they had been fixed prior.

Has it really been that long? I can remember clearly logging into Origin 5 minutes after it's birth with my paladin Nemesis and working my butt off for about 12 hours to try to place my first Origin house just northwest of Brit. Wasn't too long after that when I had my first run in with a BTH member, lol.

I was actually really close to closing my account after being very unhappy with a couple other shards until they announced Origin. I ended up playing for 4 more years after that because it was such a great place to live.

It doesnt seem that long ago does it Chaucer? Seems like yesterday.

I was like you and had become discouraged with UO, but was very courious at the thought of a brand new shard. It was a strange move that first day, mainly because my husband was hesitant to change shards and so I ventured here with a guildmate.

It took only one day though, to fall in love with Origin and its people. Everyone was in the same boat as we were and everyone was trying to cope with thier new characters and at the same time, was doing everything they could to help others get started. Trying to place those houses was probably the worst part of it, but being competetive, it almost seemed like a contest of sorts to see who would win...LOL

There were many days of shearing sheep for gold and killing cows, which I hadnt done in years. Watching your bank account grow from zero was also great intertainment to say the least.

The one person I will remember always from the first day, was Lady Sounder. She did get a house in town placed, on the southeast corner which XMG now owns. She offered vendors for free to anyone that needed one to get started making gold and did alot to help new people who came in daily. Everyone did their best to help each other actually and those days will always be remembered as the best of UO.The best of Origin.
