Because the ore on the ellies is loot and not gathered resources.

hides and scales must be harvested from the corpse which means you are gathering the resources off a corpse. If you do not cut up the body do you recieve the hides and scales? No you do not. In order to get the hides you must harvest the corpse. That is why you get double because you are gathering.

Then I think we should be able to use our shovel on the corpse, break the thing apart, and get twice the ore..

True but ore elementals themselves are harvested. Except dull copper elementals (which can not be spawned using garg a axe) and shadow elementals in that tokonunu place...or whatever the kids call it. All others are spawned by the act of harvesting. Which are basically the same action required to harvest leather and scales.....double click one thing and target another.
We don't spawn leather/scale bearing beasties, we walk up to them and clunk'em on the head.

Now that's an interesting idea. Use mining tools on their body and get another 12(tram) 24(fel) ore. Or better yet mine 25 GRANITE from their corpse.

Be happy the Devs dont change the ore amount on the ellies to the rate of Dull Copper ellies. When you kill a DC ellie you only get something like 2 or 3 ore off them. Then this 25 ore off the rest would seem like double or triple!
