Last night I moved my GM Mage/Necro into the Puzzle Board room by the Hall of Death. And I had a hell of a lot more trouble than I should have.
That undead hallway, for instance, was a real fustercluck. I was hit from all sides and I did the old PK-ambush-panic mistake and fled from spellflingers when they had me low.
Chugging GHs as I bolted, I grimly noted that with my pallyarcher I have this room totally clocked, but with a mage I'm having trouble just navigating it.
Suddenly, getting stuck, I got pissed and just opened up with ebolts and flamestrikes. The bone mages were decimated in my retaliatory strikes -- which shows me my character has the firepower: it's the tactics that are deficient.
Indeed, a lot of the time when I get in a sticky situation with my mage, I notice I still have tons of mana -- I'm just not using it to its potential. Maybe being a pallyarcher has lulled me into a lazy playstyle.
Can I get a crash course on Mage/Necro tactics? The only thing I'm learning is that rushing into the heat of action like with my pallyarcher just gets me killed. It's not all just hiding and casting EVs, is it?
I guess the best advice is what I already know deep inside: I need to practice.
