For a number of years I typically take my tailor out of the house with a load of kits, unfilled BODs and a couple of hirelings to help take care of the more challenging spawn and work the hides while traveling around. After the recent patch I am no longer able to recruit any hireling 
You ask, they say you can hire them for X gold a day, you drop the gold on the hireling, your gold reduces by the offered amount but they do not take any orders nor show up in the pet/follower count!!
