No Professions Forum for the Tracking skill ?

I looked at the Professions Forums page, the one that lists all of the various Professions in UO Forums, and for none of the available Forums is listed the Tracking skill as pertaining to a given Forum.

Which would then be the proper Stratics Forum to discuss issues, ideas, enhancements for this UO skill ?

Unfortunately there isn't really any proper place to discuss the skill.
I saw your other topic regarding your questions on Tracking and how no one responded. Your best bet would to just keep posting and hopefully someone will be knowledgeable enough to answer your question. I don't think many players run Tracking on any of their characters now a days or have even leveled it up. So the information on it is going to be a bit sparse.

Thanks, yeah, it looks like this skill is quite neglected.....

But I hope there is hope, after all Forensic Evaluation was brought up to a new life when the Devs activated the Honesty Virtue so who knows, perhaps UO players could bring up ideas, if we had a proper forum to discuss them, about possible ways to enhance Tracking for both PvP and PvM ?

My gripe, as of now, about this skill, is that it is a bit of a pain to raise because of the skill downtimer (about 10 to 12 seconds in between uses...) and in the end the range is very limited....
I am currently 85 tracking and I can only track down a target to at most 19 paces away. Clearly way too short a range, IMHO. I am not sure whether getting to GM will increase the range considerably....
Personally, I think that a GM tracker should be able, at least for a mid size town like Skara Brae, to stand up in the middle of the Town and track anything wanted all over through it.... Of course players with Hiding and Stealth have some sort of protection over this which is currently as it is....

But as for tracking NPCs, be them monsters or anything else, a GM tracker should be able to track them screens upon several screens away........

Also, another gripe that I have is the CAP there currently is on targets' results. This makes the skill useless when used in a large spawn area or in a Town. Say that I am tracking 1 single target in an area filled of possible targets, with the current CAP, the one single target I am looking for might be left out from the list and I might therefore overlook it thus making my 100.0 invested points useless...........

The CAP needs to go and perhaps the searches be administered through multiple sub-menues but all of the available targets should always be reported by the tracking search, never ever leaving out any because of a CAP limit to results....

Say, for example, that I am tracking for a specific NPC (be it for a quest or whatever...) and I know that the NPC will be a "yellowly named" one, not a NPC with a blue name, well, then I should be able to limit my search to NPCs carrying a yellow name OR NPCs carrying a blue name, but never ever leaving out any possible target result because there are too many results to be displayed....

Also, for monsters, say that I am looking for a particular type of Monster over others (like in large spawn areas), I should be able to selectively tell to my tracking search WHICH monster (or animal, for taming purposes) I want to track down.

Also, the direction arrow that points to my tracking target showing me where to go, should activate also from a very far distance, many many screens away. As of now, one needs to be way too close for it to activate, often I can read the name on my screen way before the arrow actually activates which makes using this skill pretty much useless...... one can just run around and looking at all names until the wanted name shows up on screen, even telling from which direction one needs to go to find it..............

If we consider that in real life expert trackers can find from footprints hints to a target that is miles away, I think that a UO GM tracker should be able to find out about a wanted target way, but WAY at a bigger range than the skill offers now.............

Perhaps it would be good to have a Forum on Stratics where players who would like enhancements and changes to this skill might be able to discuss about it ? And who knows, perhaps Mesanna or any other developer might even step into the discussion to tell their side of the story about this skill and its possible revamping ?

My swag on the proper forum would be crime. For the reason, tracking goes with stealing and stealing is in he crime forum.

*shrugs* Works for me.

But I'm just an old school miner.

I do not agree....

Tracking is more a hunter's tool, besides, the Crime Forum is already quite underused and I am worried that putting Tracking there might leave this neglected skill further neglected......

Perhaps there should be a Forum for neglected skills where developers might go get ideas from players to revamp them and bring them to a new life ?

As it happens, I saw your question on Tracking. I didn't reply because I don't know the answer to your question. I would guess others did the same, and for the same reason. All I know about tracking is contained in the article on the subject on http://uo2.stratics.com.

I suppose I could log in to test center, set tracking to GM and test it - but then so could you.

As for creating a forum for underused skills - don't you think it would be underused too? We already have rather a lot of forums. Most people look for tracking in UO Crime. That's where there's a prefix for it, and that's where you can set a filter to show only those threads containing that prefix.
Here's how to do that:

What an unfortunate skill tracking is....

I tested it on Test Server and at 100.0 skill I was able to "see" a NPC Town cryer at no more than 20 paces away. At 21 my tracking would not report him.
Problem is, that "All Names" reports the name of the cryer from already as 18 paces away....

Bottom line is, as the skill is today there is no use whatsoever for it that I can think of. Just perhaps in PvP or Factions to detect hidden players but the range is way too short and that's about it as possible use.... For NPCs tracking just use all names and run around, whenever the wanted name shows up on screen one has found the target.........

I hope that Mesanna will consider giving tracking some love by at least removing the reported targets CAPs so that any and all targets within range will be reported, no matter how many they may be, and considerably, massively increasing the range for tracking at least at higher skill levels.

Tracking needs to work from several and several screens away, like 100 or 150 paces away at the very least....

You do know that tracking works on hidden people, right? That's the only reason anyone would use that skill, to track hidden people, not exposed people.

Even if we were to expand the search area, I doubt anyone would find the skill more useful. Exposed people are already easy enough to locate without the use of tracking. Tracking hidden/stealthing individuals is the only real application that this skill has.

I wish there was an option at 100 skill to track only hidden people and hidden mobs (there are a few, and perhaps should be more). That would make it easier to sort through the clutter.

I disagree, there is lots of instances where it is necessary to find exposed NPCs, for Quests, to return lost items for the Honesty Virtue or even to locate individual mosters for Events and such where an increased range tracking would come very usefull making the skill way more usefull than just to track hidden players....

Just imagine that one might ned to find a given NPC for an Event or to return a lost item, the player goes in a town and using GM tracking could be able to find the target saving up a whole lot of time and running around of town....

Or for example, in Catskills there currently is an Event where a handfull of Daemons "may" spawn scattered around any of the Virtue Towns. As of now it is a pain to always keep all Towns checked up at various intervals, having GM tracking one would just recall to Town, bring up the tracking screen, select Monster and voila', get in 1 or 2 trackings a finite answer whether a monster spawned there or not, a royal savin up of time..........

Tracking can be way, but way more usefull than just tracking hidden players, if it is adjusted removing the current CAP on resultsdispalyed and increasing the tracking range by 6 or 7 folds....

Besides, I think that a revamping of the Tracking skill might fit just perfectly with the current redoing of factions into Virtue and Un-Virtue that is in the works....
