Nightmare taming tactics?

Think I may try taming a nightmare soon (almost at the required taming level) and was wondering if there are any tricks/tactics that work well with them apart from honoring yourself. They are in the class of tameable that can be angered by a taming attempt, right? If so, I'm guessing having them attack a tank pet and then trying to tame would not be effective.

A more general question about taming magic-casting creatures: does anyone soulstone magic resist and slap it on when they go out to tame something like a greater dragon or nightmare?

Thanks (as always) for your help and advice!

I have always just used peace or honor to tame the mares! I never worried about resist but if you have it it wont hurt!
greater dragons are another story for me they are a pain in the rear! I have only tamed a couple and i used honor for sure !

some things that can help

resist spells
peace you or a friend
honor
disco (but then there is the penalty)
a friend to heal you is always good
spell weaving ..

My first one took over a hour to get
my second one took about 20 min

I haven't tried using another pet to keep a mare occupied while I tame it, but they're easy enough to lead tame if you beat them down to a little health. It's worth trying the second pet thing though, it might work for mares too :) I haven't needed to grab a mare for a whle so I haven't tested it heh.

Out of habit I use an energy vortex to beat a mare down, then I dispel it when the mare is on a sliver of health. Then just lead tame the mare. You can invis yourself if you find the mare is still giving you a hard time, but you shouldn't take too much damage if it's on low health. Carry orange petals to save yourself being poisoned, or a few cure potions.

I don't use resist skill, I just try to have a suit with full resists on it. If the pet casts magic I'll carry orange petals to avoid it poisoning me, but that's it. Casting invis on yourself is another useful tactic.

I tame greater dragons in pretty much the same way, but I do tend to invis myself more regularly with those. I usually use an unbonded dragon to work the greater spawn, then it can be used to beat up a keeper dragon and "suicided" on it. Basically I tell it to stop and let it die once the wild dragon is at a sliver of health :)

yeah they are easy, just mind blast or beat them down in health so their fireball does nothing and lead tame with invis and heals often and you will get them. make sure to lore them and get a real nice one and avoid bothering with a crappy one, because despite their name they are actually very wimpy and you will need the best you can get. i have a 3.9 myself and its quite weak. im very dissappointed in them.

I would just tame a crappy one and use that to beat a good one down to sliver. I find this is much better than the EV as sometimes the dispel doesnt work and the EV ruins your mare.

What i normally do is send in the mare (or EV if you dont have one to beat it with) WAit till sliver health then mount it (dispel). Spam taming>wait for target> last target. It will get angered but will move slow due to low health. Then either invis your way through or heal. They dont have endless mana so it shouldnt be a problem.

Just got a 4.3 dark mare today ... so proud :) But there isnt much difference from a 3.6 and up .... just better resist most of the time and STR

Thanks everyone for all the great advice. I'll try out some of your suggestions and let you know how it goes once I'm at the right skill level. :)

What penalty are you talking about? Discordance does not induce any penalty to the tameable creature. Are you perhaps thinking of Paralyze?

HI, Yes Mares are like Dragons and will give an anger responce and more so the lower your taming skill.
Have a friend (or yourself Peace it) and have a macro for the use of the tamining skill.
This is for UO 2D macros, go in to UO macros, make a new one, use a key (ie "t" for this example) Set it to use skill "animal taming" and the next line as "last target"
The Macro will look like this.

use skill---animal tamining
last target

Thats it a simpile but required macro.

With this easy macro all you have to do is target the mare (while hidden you could use a bladed item to try to skin it {it wont work and you still remain hidden} but you have set your last target :) )
When you have your target required just park a finger on that key, You will spam a lot of anger messages, but who cares, only you can see those messages.

That leaves you free to do a small dance with-out any input, jut keep ahead of the mare till the "Will you be my friend" etc comes up, With a easy macro like this lead tamining can become easy.

Put me in the camp that simply beats them down with an EV, dispels it, then lead tames them. Not difficult at all. As has been mentioned, farm them for a good one, don't settle for anything less than a 4.0 on the power calculator, as I find that good one's are relatively easy to come by. All three of my tamers run mares that are at least 4.1, and my best mare is a 4.9.

Para taming a mare lowers it's skills a bit after tame but it doesn't matter much as they all train up to 100 anyway regardless of whether you para tame them or not. If you have 120 eval int I find para taming them is the easiest thing. Peace taming should also work well on them as their barding skill is quite low.

And for the person who was disappointed with his mare, I think mares are one of the most underrated pets, but as with any pet, you need to know how to use them. Mares don't make a good tank, but they are an excellent secondary pet in combination with some other pet, such as a rune beetle, and the fact that you can mount them makes them invaluable, and easy to keep out of trouble.

Bake Kitsune are a far tougher 2-slot pet. You'd only get a mare if you wanted to be able to mount it. If you have Ninjitsu, are a Gargoyle, or have a Dread Warhorse, there is no need.

I have a couple of 4.0 bakes in the stables waiting to be trained. I was hoping to try taming a nightmare more for the experience, and to get some practice taming magic casters so I can become a better tamer. I have bake taming down pat (thanks to the great folks on this forum!) and wanted to try something new and (at least for me) harder.

Actually, I'd pretty emphatically disagree with you. There is a serious problem with Dread Warhorses used in tandem with other pets. They make a good tank, but you really don't want to have the pet you are using as a mount be your tank, in my opinion. I want to be able to use my mount for mobility, and my tank as a tank at the same time, and you can't do that if you are riding your tank.

And bake kitsune are, in my opinion, over rated. I'm not quite sure why but in spite of their amazing resists, they are pretty hard to keep alive. I don't know the reason why, but one possible guess is that they don't have the parry skill. And from what I've seen nightmares actually have a higher dps than kitsune. And to head off one possible counter to what I am saying, I have an excellent bake kitsune, and it is fully trained, and I have quite a bit of experience running with it.

All pets are in my opinion, situationally useful, and different pets work well with different templates and different contexts. The nightmare is still, in my opinion a very useful pet in the right context, and with the right template, and I have the kills to back that up. In general I'd much rather have a rune beetle and a nightmare than a kitsune and a dread warhorse, and I have used both combinations pretty extensively, and all of my pets are exceptional quality and fully trained, so we're not comparing a Lamborghini with a Lada here.
