Nightmares have a max of:

125 Intel=125 Mana
125 Dex=125 Stamina
525 Strength
Max HP's=315

They can GM ALL of the skills you typed, but nothing over GM level.

Resist max's are 65/40/40/40/30.

HP 301
Str 512
Dex114
Int 125

resist 61/40/35/40/26

sweet thanks

So what is the best way to train up magery? The magery is at 31.1

Honestly, not to sound like a ****, but if you farm them a bit more you can do much better. Nightmares are probably the easiest pet in game to get an exceptional one. I consider an exceptional one to be a 4.0 or better on the Pet Calculator. I have three on three tamers, and they are all 4+ in their rating. Look for one that is 4-8 total off of perfect resists, it really isn't all that difficult.

As far as magery, there is no fast way. Unlike some folks that will tell you to fight the pet on mobs to gain, I grind magery and THEN work the pet on mobs, since magery gains slowly, and even slower when all the other skills are gm'd. I usually "blue" fight them, by having them fight another one of my pets (usually a bake, unicorn, or another mare). This still takes many hours to get GM'd, but I've found it faster than anything else. JMO.

Honestly, nightmares are junk. Go spend the gold and get yourself a dread warhorse. Most useful pet in game. Not to mention rare, cause they no longer spawn.

Nightmares are hardly junk. Of course they're not as powerful as a dread, but they are only a two slotter and take less skill to control. They make a solid pair with either a dread or a bug. They also can be had for a little time invested, rather than 10+ million for **** poor one.

Your opinion has been noted. However, the OP is asking about nightmares, not dread warhorses. The clue was in the thread title...

But now you've mentioned dreads, let's think about it. Not every tamer has the required skill level, gold supply or even cares about the rarity or otherwise of a pet. If the OP is skint or has too little skill, a dread is completely unsuitable.

Perhaps the OP already has a dread and wants a mare to team it with. Or they want a hunting partner for a rune beetle. Dreads are completely unsuitable for that, because control slots cap out at 5, not 6. Which is why, when someone asks about one pet, it's helpful to keep on topic and let them make their own choices.

It's like a guy going into a car showroom and asking about a pickup only to have the salesman insist that he really wants a minibus because pickups are all rubbish.

Thanks Wenchy. And you are correct. I am 120 lore and 90.5 taming. I am not taking taming over 101. I don't want the dread nor do I want a greater dragon. I love cu's and nightmares. Thanks for the replies.

First of all, my knowledge of taming is exponentially higher than yours. 11 years of taming experience here (on siege), where's your experience?
Secondly, any tamer that only has GM skills SHOULD be working their skills to at least 106 taming and lore. A balance of the 2 skills IS more important than having one skill much higher than the other.
Thirdly, what every tamer strives for is the perfect pet and that in itself makes it arguealbly the rarest item in the game.
Lastly, you need to take your own advice about staying on topic! Wth does buying a car have to do with UO?!?! Get a clue and stop posting non-sense just because you may think you know what your talking about.

Incorrect.
1. Wenchkin is moderator here because of her long and varied experience as a tamer, going back many years. Her join date is simply a reflection of the board crash, not accurate.

2. Every tamer does not strive for the best pet. You are attributing your values to others, an unfortunate trait of many.

3. A dread war horse may be a very useful pet, but you can't partner it with a rune beetle.

I am correct on all three counts.
1) Just by reading some of her posts, im willing to bet she has less than 4 yrs experience as a tamer.
2) Name me one tamer that is happy with their pet (any pet) that wouldn't trade it for a better one, or for that matter, tame one in the field that you happen to come across.
3) Find me a post of a rune beetle selling for over 5 mill (siege boards have sold numerous DW's for 5 mill and up). Not saying that paying gold for a pet makes it more valuablem, just stating that those pep's that have a really good knowledge of taming know that the DW is infinitely more valuable than anyother pet (for pvm or pvp). A rune beetle is only good when partnered with another pet (bake or nightmare) both of which are simply weaker than a dw. Whereas the dread can be used by itself and be more effective for both pvm and pvp, making it a more valuable pet.
Lastly, everyone is entitled to their own opions about their own pets. I'm simply stating common tamer knowledge here.

I agree with a previous poster farming them a bit and you can do better.

I take a Mare, Cu or Dread in to do the Killing. I invis, wait for it to spawn, lore it to decide if it is an upgrade or not. If it is not then I kill it.

I am very confident the mentioned HP's and strength are low, not by a lot but I am confident they are low.

I am fairly confident I have seen a mare at 325 hp (just spawned and no buffs) and a strength of 540. I did not tame it as it's resists were crap, compared to stratics information. I believe more in Resists than I do in Stats. :)

Just my 2cp's on the value of Nightmares

A Digression, Nightmare's were a superior pet when I left, 8 months after Trammel went live. One could take down an Ogre Lord with very little need for me to heal or vet it.

I come back 13 months ago, work my rear end off to get to the ability to tame a Nightmare. I take it to the Ogre Lords (Wanted the gold, fame and training). It required constant veting and healing. I parked it in the stables and moved on.

About 8 months later and a good deal better informed on the changes to Pets and Taming, I get the Mare out and take a long hard look at it (I am crunched on stable space). I have a pair of Dreads on each account, a Pair of GD's on each account and a Pair of Cu's on each account.

I get information from here suggesting that some time between when I left a returned that mares, wymrs and dragons were nerf'd (cut in half?).

I look at that Mare really hard. It's wrestling, tactics and anatomy are all at 100 and the Ogre Lords still chew it up like it was nothing. Not as bad as when I first tamed it but yeah it was a wimp compared to what they were when I left.

THEN I SAW SOMETHING, something I clearly did not see before. Its magery and evalint were in the 20's or lower. The Nightmares Magic spells were always hard hitting. I could not bring myself to believe this mare with a 20's Magery and Evalint were doing any significant damage.

So I decided to spend the time sink and get them both to 100. Now that Mare is about equal to my memory of the Mares before I left.

Would I take a Dread Warhorse in vs a fully trained Mare and a Fully trained Bake Kitsune? No thanks, I will take the Mare and BK.

Would I take a Dread Warhorse (yes fully trained) in vs a fully trained Cu (yes 100 healing)? Probably not, but this is kind of iffy. It is a clear answer if I may not be able to stick around to vet, then it is the Cu. The rest depends on the matchup of the mobs attack vs the pets resists and the pets attack vs the mobs resists. The two (Dread and Cu) are that close.

To say a Mare is worthless? Not in my book, for a 100 (GM) tamer, the Mare and Bake is a darned good combo for the investment in skill points.

Unlike the OP, I would get my taming at or over the To Tame requirement for the Cu. That is just my opinion.

I didn't realise this was a competition :D Don't presume you know how experienced I am as a tamer when you a) haven't met me in game and b) have no idea how long I've been playing or what I've done in that time. As Petra rightly pointed out, my Stratics account is a fresh one because my old posts couldn't be merged in.

Secondly, any tamer that only has GM skills SHOULD be working their skills to at least 106 taming and lore. A balance of the 2 skills IS more important than having one skill much higher than the other.
Not every tamer wants to own the high end pets that require that level of skill. Furthermore, if a tamer is still training and can't yet control a pet, then there's no point in recommend it before they're ready. And if we don't know anything about the tamer, their skills or what the pet is for, I think it's polite to treat them as if they might just know what pet they want and why and help them decide on the pet of their choice.

Thirdly, what every tamer strives for is the perfect pet and that in itself makes it arguealbly the rarest item in the game.
I disagree completely with you there.... Some tamers play for enjoyment, not to size their pets up against those belonging to others. Tamers are individual players, with their own preferences in what makes a good pet. You only have to look at the discussions about which pets are worth keeping to see that.

Sir, not wishing to be difficult, but you are *still* attributing your values to others.

Name you one tamer? I could name several, but I will simply name myself. I have had most of my pets for several years and have not replaced them despite them not being the best they could be.

I have no need to find a post of a rune beetle's selling price. I don't buy pets, ever. I catch them myself. I don't rate my pets, my house, my suit or anything else I have by its value in gp. I do not play the game to amass gold, I play for enjoyment.

My tamer is on Europa, is legendary in all 3 skills and has the same number of stable slots dead as she does alive. None of my pets have been trained through any use of 'tricks' or 'quick' methods. They fight their way to their skills. I do not play the way you do, I do not see my pets the way you do. I do not claim my playstyle to be more, or less, valid than yours, just different. I do, however, realise that different people have different criteria by which they chose to play. You apparently do not.

Well said!
I have a drake and a Dragon that I have had for many years and I get people all the time saying why dont you get a better one and my response is usually that I am attached to them and they are usually older than the person asking the question (in time played that is) sheesh I just got rid of my first polar bear and he must have been even older !

What follows is intended to be constructive in terms of how this member of the community sees a thing and as constructive criticism to a fellow member of the community (this part is by no means easy to see, nor is it direct and that is by design).

I agree the individual is (knowingly or unknowingly) attributing their values to others. Said differently they are making a generalization and asserting it as a truth.

You are absolutely right and very wrong, imho.
Would I trade my 4.3 Cu for your 5.0 Cu? In an instant! Hand him over!
Would I trade my 4.3 Cu for a 5.0 Cu (that required 10,000 hrs to locate or 500 mil to buy)? I don't think so! That's closer to the real question.

When I found my 4.3 & 4.2 Cus (2 Tamers) I stopped looking. I'm a satisfied Cu owner and now spend my time on other stuff.

If your satisfaction is measured by perfection, you're in for a very disappointing life!
