Over the years I have attended and helped with many fun and interesting Role-play events. Role-play events vary greatly: funerals, Balls, Jousts, wide scale plots involving curses, Weddings, Battles, Political Debates, and the list goes on and on. The key here is creativity, let your imagination flow. Any event you can dream up, with the right help, can come to life for your guest.
Each Role-play community is different, they have their own charms, and each community has its own unique character. This factor alone highly effects the kind of events that work best on your shard. So if you are considering running an event for your community or to introduce role-play to the UO public in general here are a few tips for getting this done.

Often time’s people do not realize the amount of work that needs to be put into a role-play event or any event in general. A good coordinator makes the event look effortless. Turn to your friends, guild or community to help you pull it all together. So don’t try to go it alone! Keep your sanity. Also contact the EM for your shard and let them know about your event a lot of times they will be willing to help out a bit or just attend to see what is going on.

Pick a location with its surrounding area in mind. If you pick a location with spawn around it, that’s not an issue just remember to warn guests of that possible conflict. Also if the location is a bit hard to find, say in Ilshenar, mark the pathway with torches or some item that will lead guests to the desired location. As for time to pick, every shard is different. However from what I have seen Sundays are great days for events or, during the week at night. When choosing what time, optimal hours for events and role-play range between 8pm to 11pm on your shard.

Don’t go overboard with complicated games and activities. While it’s important to engage your guests and make them a part of things, keep it simple and limit activities to one or two throughout the whole night. Too many activities and too much complication can turn an event a bit too chaotic. Keep prizes simple, and possibly depending on the event, make up goodie bags to give out with something role-play significant inside it. I have seen everything from clothing made by gypsies to weapons engraved especially for the event. Also keep in mind you do not want to bore your guests with too much to do and to long of an event.

Everyone knows a Photoshop wizard, do a flyer well in advance (a month to three weeks is usually good) letting people know when, where and what. Make the flyer interesting by placing it on a scroll background or adding pictures to it. Don’t be shy to speak with a stratics reporter for your shard, or even I to come and cover your event!

We don’t have a crystal ball, often times like the role-play we do, events have unexpected twists we didn’t foresee. Games that sounded good have a flaw we weren’t expecting, people nab a few benches ect. The best thing to do is just roll with it. Don’t stress be flexible, no event goes off without a hitch, do your best to fix the situation and move on!
